Historia
They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened. Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them.

I wanted a lot more witchcraft, way less pregnancy tropes
Revisado: 04-14-25
I was expecting a fun witchy story, throwing me into the groovy late 60s, true friendship. Instead, I got a lot of complaining about salt cravings and stereotypes of southern women.

Historia
1989, Lamesa, Texas. A small west Texas town driven by oil and cotton—and a place where everyone knows everyone else’s business. So it goes for Tolly Driver, a good kid with more potential than application, seventeen, and about to be cursed to kill for revenge. Here Stephen Graham Jones explores the Texas he grew up in, and shared sense of unfairness of being on the outside through the slasher horror Jones loves, but from the perspective of the killer, Tolly, writing his own autobiography. Find yourself rooting for a killer in this summer teen movie of a novel gone full blood-curdling tragic.

This guy never stops rambling
Revisado: 08-06-24
This was a book club choice so I tried SO HARD multiple times to get through but holy cow this guy loves to talk! I don’t need a half hour side note on the full backstory of how a neighbor bought his car or seven metaphors for each sentence of actual plot! DNF in chapter 3, and I rarely DNF. story was maybe good but all the tangents make it so hard to follow.

Historia
Wendell Newman, a young ranch hand in Montana, has recently lost his mother, leaving him an orphan. His bank account holds less than $100, and he owes back taxes on what remains of the land his parents owned, as well as money for the surgeries that failed to save his mother's life. An unexpected deliverance arrives in the form of seven-year-old Rowdy Burns, the mute and traumatized son of Wendell's incarcerated cousin. When Rowdy is put under his care, what begins as an ordeal for Wendell turns into a powerful bond as he comes to love the boy more than he ever thought possible.

The imagery in this book is stunning, you so easily fall into feeling like you are in the mountains seating flies even if you’ve never been in a wood. The story is so realistic and heartbreaking, a good read.

Holy Cow
Revisado: 02-01-24
No spoilers here, just be warned there is a LOT of characters to keep up with and a lot to unpack. I had to start taking notes and ended up with 6 full pages. Many characters are on their own story lines so can be difficult to keep straight but SJM does a good job of splitting them so not too much time passes. I felt the pacing was either full throttle or crawling with not much in between. The overall timeline of this book is crazy short for the amount of events. I honestly think she could have split this into multiple books (chapter 19 alone could be its own series) but also glad she didn’t drag it out. I’m very excited for how this ties in with other SJM series and new potentials.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Predictable but entertaining enough
Revisado: 05-09-23
Nothing in this book is a new concept, definitely follows a lot of YA storylines of war-torn-teens-in-training type worlds, but with dragons. The dialogue and relationships are predictable. The spice scenes are decent. Narrator is breathy and not much distinction between character voices or with dialogue vs narration but does at least keep the correct energy for each scene.
Overall nothing to mark it as unique or special but not horrible either. I will still read the second one when it comes out but this will not be a must read for me.

Cliche and bad voice acting
Revisado: 01-28-22
I thought the idea of the shadows was interesting but otherwise very cliche “young king looking for his family’s murderers” and overly confident main character with no actual skills combined with a want-to-be sexy voice acting making it feel even more cheap. Not recommended.

Historia
When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, listeners can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun. This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire.

Hard to distinguish thoughts vs spoken
Revisado: 10-21-20
So much of this book is thoughts mixed with spoken dialogue and the narrator doesn’t distinguish this which makes following along very difficult. It’s also so much repeat of the first book that it’s easy to tune out.

Historia
Magic, adventure, mystery, and romance combine in this epic debut in which a young princess must reclaim her dead mother’s throne, learn to be a ruler - and defeat the Red Queen, a powerful and malevolent sorceress determined to destroy her. On her 19th birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa.

I'm only finishing it because I bought it
Revisado: 11-28-17
The story overall was a very average coming of age, semi medieval society style book. The main character is the typical insecure woman who is given too much power by chance of fate and has to step into some big shoes for a failing country who needs a hero. The side characters have more of a personality but follow more of the typical body guard, handsome bad boy crush, evil queen, and abused women given a second chance. The only unique idea is the history of the land, but it never gets explained and it's very confusing.
Honestly, it's not anything special, no new ideas, and I only finished it because I have nothing better in my library at the moment.
