Historia
1975: A young Irish-American man joins an elite US Marine unit to get the most intensive military training possible—then joins the Irish Republican Army, during the days of some of the bloodiest fighting ever in the Irish-British conflict. It is a story that will see him running guns with American mobster—and secret IRA fundraiser—Whitey Bulger; running from safe house to safe house in the Irish countryside, one step ahead of British troops; fending off a recruitment offer from the CIA; and being one of the masterminds behind a campaign to take out London's electrical system.

This is an example of historical fiction done right! The narrator does an amazing job of conveying not only various characters, but also the intensity of certain scenes. The story draws you in and makes you feel like you are a part of the action.

Great Story!
Revisado: 10-20-20
I’m a fan of traditional westerns. I’ve never listened to or read a weird western, but the description of the book caught my eye. I thought I’d give it a shot. I’m glad I did. The story is really good, and the magical element is slight enough that it reads like a not weird western. The narrator has the perfect voice/performance for a western too. This author and narrator definitely make a winning combo.

Historia
Stalin’s Scribe is the first biography of a man who was once one of the Soviet Union’s most prominent political figures. Thanks to the opening of Russia’s archives, Brian Boeck discovers that Sholokhov’s official Soviet biography is actually a tangled web of legends, half-truths, and contradictions. Boeck examines the complex connection between an author and a dictator, revealing how a Stalinist courtier became an ideological acrobat and consummate politician in order to stay in favor and remain relevant after the dictator’s death.

Great Biography
Revisado: 01-05-20
My favorite novel is Quiet Flows the Don. I've read it in both English and Russian. Admittedly, I was probably predisposed to like this book since it is one of the few books written in English about Sholokhov. I think that Boeck did an excellent job placing Sholokhov within the time in which he lived, with various intrigues, etc, which were common in the Soviet period. He also gives a full and balanced look at the plagiarism controversy that surrounded Sholokhov's best work.
The narrator likewise does a good job. I've found that in listening to non-fiction, the narrator makes all the difference. Rudnicki was definitely up to the challenge. As an added bonus, he's also narrated a version of Quiet Flows the Don which came out in August 2019. So if you like this book, check that one out.

Mikhail Sholokhov’s groundbreaking epic novel gives a sweeping depiction of Russian life and culture in the early 20th century. In the same vein as War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy, And Quiet Flows the Don gives listeners a glimpse into many aspects of Russian culture, and the choices a country makes when faced with war and destruction.

A Beautiful Story
Revisado: 12-01-19
I'll confess that Quiet Flows the Don (along with the second part, the Don Flows Home to the Sea) is my favorite novel. I've read it in both Russian and English, and I consider it the finest novel ever written. That disclaimer aside, I eagerly pre-ordered the audio version as soon as I saw it would be available, and then counted down the weeks until its release. Stefan Rudnicki does justice to the story, and listening to it was a true pleasure. His performance is certainly commendable. It can be a tricky book, with many different characters and shifting viewpoints, so having a skilled narrator is a must. Rudnicki did not disappoint. If you enjoy Russian literature, tales of forbidden love, or sweeping epics, then this is the book for you. Also, check out the 14 part 2015 television adaptation of the novel after you listen to it. You won't be sorry.

A Somber Look At World War One
Revisado: 11-23-19
I thought this series was incredibly well done. However, I would add the caveat that it might not appeal to those with only a passing interest in World War One. For the history enthusiast so, Tommies is radio drama gold. From the mundane to the terrifying, Tommies gives you a glimpse inside the lives of the men and women who fought, bled, and died during those cataclysmic years. The sound effects alone make this a great listen. I particularly appreciated that it covered some of the forgotten fronts like Africa and the Middle East. If you enjoy reading (or listening to) stories about the First World War, then get this series without further delay.

An Excellent Tale
Revisado: 12-02-18
This book is a perfect blend of a good story and a great narrator. The description of the ravages of the 1900 Storm on Galveston are incredible. It’ll keep your ear glued to your listening device. I also found the final part of the book of particular interest because it is set at Spindletop near Beaumont. I grew up just down the road in Port Arthur and so I appreciated the local history. From murder most foul to a vengeful Mother Nature, this book has it all!

Excellent Radio Drama!
Revisado: 11-24-18
This is an incredibly well done radio drama. It can be tough to keep track of all the characters, but if you go to the BBC 4 website you can see a list of them. It touches on virtually every aspect of World War One on the British Home Front.

An Excellent Book
Revisado: 08-23-18
I’m a retired firefighter in Texas. The author does an incredible job describing not just the fire, but also the lives of the men who fought it. Their loss seems all the more tragic after you get to know them through the discussion of their backgrounds and personal/family lives. I highly recommend this book. It’s one of the few I’ve listened to more than once. (Three times to be exact.)

Historia
Dragnet was perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural drama in media history. The series gave millions of audience members a feel for the boredom and drudgery, as well as the danger and heroism, of real-life police work.
Actor and producer Jack Webb's aims in Dragnet were for realism and unpretentious acting. He achieved both goals, and Dragnet remains a key influence on subsequent police dramas in many media.

Just the facts, ma'am.
Revisado: 05-06-18
Dragnet is the godfather of all radio dramas. This collection is well worth it as it provides hours of entertainment. The stories are fast moving, the dialogue sparse and lean, and you get a sense of the boredom followed by excitement of police work. Jack Webb didn't shy away from controversial themes, which is remarkable given the time period in which these programs were produced. For example, listen to the episode about the boy who gets a .22 rifle for Christmas. Some of the episodes repeat, but that is because they were repeated on the radio too. The only downside is that a few of the episodes didn't record as well and can be a bit spotty. All things considered, this collection is a must for those who like old time radio police procedurals, plus you get an interesting slice of American life from the late 40s through the mid 50s.
