A fascinating story of what involved, wise parenting can do—and in the throws of Hollywood, no less. Congratulations to Ron and Clint for telling your story so well and for expressing the love you still have for each other.

Oh, the words!! And the uniquely engaging story. Mystery, intrigue, love, wonder. Flows as beautifully, fluidly and mystifyingly as the River Thames. One of the hardest books to say goodbye to. I’m already re-listening. The narrator is top notch. Everything is top notch.

I don’t think swearing is necessary in good literature, especially YA literature. Did not finish. Returning.

This evil drug-baron family calculatingly hides behind their narcissistic guise of philanthropy. In the big picture, it is eye opening how big Parma manipulates the masses, but the case study of the Sackler dynasty is deeply alarming and infuriating. I found the Empire of Pain very painful indeed because there was corruption on so many levels, not just with the family, their sales reps and lawyers, but with every level of government including the bought-off FDA snd CDC. I felt like I was living in a nightmare with no resolve or redemption. The bad guys just kept winning. There’s probably not a family in America that hasn’t had heartbreak due to the opioid pandemic, and we can lay that blame squarely at the feet of the well-orchestrated, drug-peddling Sackler campaign. The only satisfaction is that their names were taken off so many of the prestigious halls of art and science, and that they were finally exposed, even though justice was not served—they truly got away with murder, hundreds of thousands of murders. This is an important story. Thank you, Mr. Keffe, for the tremendous rigor it took to tell it.

Mr. Shute has written a timeless tale of war and romance and inspiring economic progress. All the characters are interesting, especially the heroine, Jean Paget. Such a clever novel based quite loosely on fact but interwoven with interestingly truthful insights into the many actual times and places written about. Very fascinating.

Neil Hunt, the narrator, is absolutely fabulous. A+

My least favorite of Jane Austen’s books. Narrator was very good in spite of the story.

The sickest person in the room usually controls the room and such is the case with Tara's father. His mental illness easily flourished and remained unchecked behind the cloak of a religion which he took to far extremes of its basic tenants. That Tara came through her radical childhood as amazingly as she did is a testament of what the innately brilliant human spirit can achieve. This is a spellbinding tale.

This story of the intricacies of three generations of a family's life is beautifully written. When one can learn from the characters in a book how to more satisfactorily respond to one's own relationships, it is an enjoyable and enlightening read. The characters were well developed, the settings were easy to envision, the family interactions were relatable, the plot was wonderful.

The bond between Perry and his incarcerated mother,Jessica, gives this story its foundation and then weaves a unique tale of the struggle for redemption and resolution. The writing is fabulous. The characters are engaging. The antagonist District Attorney is not an overly evil man. He is egotistical and misguided, like so many who have power and use it to advance their narrow-minded agendas. The resolution is heartwarming, full of grace, hope and the wisdom of not festering in bitterness. Great story, great life-lessons— I will recommend this book to my friends, young and old.

I could not enjoy the nasally narrator. The subject matter of the book was good enough to grit my teeth and tolerate the narration.
