another excellent story
Revisado: 02-17-22
TJ Klune writes another beautiful novel. This time about life and death. So refreshing in its rich adaptations of people, it is not accurate to call Klune's work fantasy fiction.

I have never read the Count of Montecristo but decided to go back and read some classic books. I am so happy I did, as this was the best book I've read in 2022.

Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Historia
Joe Allston is a retired literary agent who is, in his own words, "killing time before time gets around to killing me." His parents and his only son are long dead, leaving him with neither ancestors nor descendants, tradition nor ties. His job, trafficking the talent of others, had not been his choice. He passes through life as a spectator. But a postcard from a friend causes him to return to the journals of a trip he had taken years before.

perhaps the best book ever written in the past twe
Revisado: 12-06-21
I am particularly bias to the plot line, two old people reminiscing on their life. However, it is the way that Stegner writes, the topics he focuses upon, his sense of humor allowed me, the reader, to enter his personal space and stay a while. I think about those topics- the way my skins stands up due to lack of nutrients. I have the same sense of humor, often flowered with a swear word! I think about how many friends are passing and I can't save them, at all. And the one that passed that was closest to me, I didn't even reach out my hand.

what a different point of view
Revisado: 11-24-21
I enjoyed this novel. Like Overstory it was long with intersecting plots. At times it was a bit slow, however this father's love for his son and the wonders of science kept me going. It could have gone on for a few more chapters!

I couldn't stop think about the Secretary of State being Hilary Clinton. About half way thru the book, the protagonist was actually acting smarter than Ms Clinton. I started enjoying the book from then on.

Historia
When Harland Cain holds a .45 automatic to his head and bears down slowly upon the trigger, he experiences a profound sense of control over his destiny for the first time in his life. He savors the moment and imagines the click of the hammer, the explosion, and the bullet spiraling through the barrel before everything turns black. It's then he hears the out-of-control screaming of tires on the pavement, followed by the sickening sound of metal crashing against concrete. He lays down the pistol and crosses his yard in that predawn darkness to find a young boy, bloody and dazed.

Historia
Viktor Orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. Once Russia’s richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in London, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the Kremlin. His mansion in Chelsea’s exclusive Cheyne Walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in London. Yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, Russia’s vengeful president finally manages to cross Orlov’s name off his kill list.
