Historia
Welcome to celebrity culture in the early aughts: the reign of Perez Hilton, celebrity sex tapes, and dueling tabloids fed by paparazzi who were willing to do anything to get the shot. It was a time when the Internet was still the Wild West, and when slut-shaming, fat-shaming, and revenge porn were all considered perfectly legitimate. Celebrity was seen as a commodity to be consumed, and for the famous women of this era, they were never as popular—or as vulnerable—as when they were in crisis.

Everyone should be required to read this book and take a look at both individual responsibilities we each have in creating this environment, as well as society as a whole.

Historia
When Ava Harrison receives a letter containing an unusual job listing one month after the sudden death of her ex-boyfriend, she thinks she’s being haunted. The listing—a job as a live-in caretaker for a peculiar old man and his cranky cat in Driftwood, Alabama—is the perfect chance to start a new life. A normal life. Ava has always been too fearful to even travel, so no one’s more surprised than she is when she throws caution to the wind and drives to the distant beachside town.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Revisado: 01-31-23
Very sad at times, but Prince Harry offers a raw and unfiltered look into his world. It’s hard to imagine this being read by anyone other than the prince himself, and he does a wonderful job narrating his story and sharing details of oft-misunderstood scandals and not-no-scandals.

The beloved actress and star of One Tree Hill, White Collar, and Lethal Weapon, Hilarie Burton, tells the inspiring story of leaving Hollywood for a radically different kind of life in upstate New York with her husband Jeffrey Dean Morgan - a celebration of community, family, and the value of hard work in small town America.

I couldn’t love this more
Revisado: 04-02-22
I adore this book and Hilarie’s story. It’s probably not for you if you’re expecting a book full of stories about nothing but MTV and One Tree Hill stories, but if you want stories about her real life and experiences ending up someplace she’d never thought she’d be, building a life with her husband, becoming a mother, and the heartbreak and joy along the way, this will be an enjoyable listen for you.

Historia
Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my audiobook, Yearbook for websites and shit like that, so...here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like.

Too long
Revisado: 07-28-21
The book starts out interesting enough, with stories about Rogen’s youth and early career. It starts to lag and feel long-winded, even though the anecdotes remain interesting. It completely lost my interest around the time of the Kanye East/West story and became background noise as opposed to an engaging experience.

Historia
Richard Marx is one of the most accomplished singer-songwriters in the history of popular music. His self-titled 1987 album went triple platinum and made him the first male solo artist (and second solo artist overall after Whitney Houston) to have four singles from their debut crack the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was an even bigger smash, going quadruple platinum and landing two singles at number one.

Such a great story!
Revisado: 07-21-21
I enjoy most musician/music-industry related autobiographies and biographies and this ranks among the most enjoyable. With anecdotes I never expected (like the Chinese mafia story) and background on songwriting, how a friend of a friend of a friend connected Richard Marx to Lionel Richie and jump started his entry into the music industry, and other fun and heartfelt stories about his life and career, Marx is comfortable including his missteps as well as his successes.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

I wanted to love this book...
Revisado: 03-17-19
I was so excited when my book club chose this. I love music and strong female leads aren’t especially hard to come by - it seemed perfect! Much of the story is derivative (think “Almost Famous” meets Jen Sincero’s “Don’t Sleep With Your Drummer”), however the ending did have a more original twist, which I did enjoy.
While so many people are lauding Daisy as a voice of empowered womanhoood I can’t help but wonder what I’m missing. I found her to be weak and scared, turning to substances rather than confronting life’s problems. She did demand what she wanted out of her music and bandmates but went about it in a way that screamed entitlement rather than empowerment. It was all very “I want it now, Daddy” and I found her largely insufferable.

At 42 years old, Valerie Giglio was heading for a bright future as both a successful lawyer and professional vocalist with two CDs to her name, when out of nowhere, she suffered a brain stem stroke that ravaged her life and caused her world to spin out of control. Completely paralyzed on one side, confined to a wheelchair, her singing voice stolen from her at the height of her career, Valerie was devastated.

Determination Personified
Revisado: 10-28-17
Singing In My Own Key: A Vocalist's Triumph Over Stroke is a must-read (or a must-listen!). I've been in awe of Ms. Giglio's story as I've followed her progress through the media and her own updates but hearing her story, in her own words, and read by her personally added a further sense of wonderment to all Valerie overcame.
When she talks about how difficult it was during her recovery; after she was told she'd never sing again and could speak but a few words at a time without struggling, to now hear her tell her story at length offers a heavy dose of perspective. Valerie's story is a testament to what people are capable of and also educates on stroke and how non-discriminating it is, reglardless of your age.
