The story would have been better without all of the unnecessary and implausible plot twists and turns. Neither the author nor the narrator were good with children’s voices.

Great book that is refreshingly different than so many other books with a woman protagonist. She is very smart, makes mistakes but is allowed to recover from them. She is also not implicitly condemned for prioritizing her career, even though her career puts her through very challenging situations. There are also some engaging mysteries that develop that are more mundane than murder but also more realistic. Finally, the author did a good job with the ending. I wish there were more books like this.

This book was engaging and original. The story line kept me listening. The representation of professors/scientists was a bit off but not so that it distracted from the story.

I found this to be a lovely and touching book. Explores, among other things, our ability and obligation to change or save someone. Narrator did a terrific job bringing the boy character Ian to life and the humor and truth in his narratives.

Great writing. I’ve read another book by Choi. Both are excellent. Looking forward to more.

Wonderful, complex treatment of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and class. I appreciated especially the inclusion of health issues as they interact with race, etc.—an under appreciated though very important component, a form of structural violence.
Very readable and engaging. Terrific characters, well developed.

Patchett did an amazing job with the story line, pacing, character development, etc. Captured a certain moment as well. Streep was the cherry on top, doing justice to all the characters and bringing them to life in a way that seemed true to the narrative. Loved the ending—unexpected and just right. I will remember this book for a long time.

Like Schumacher’s first book, this is an observant and funny take on US higher education. But I also found it very sweet and touching—not sappy but generous and kind about our human struggles, both faculty and students’.

If you have liked Ruth Ware’s books in the past, you might be disappointed with this one. Far too long and repetitive. The narrator, who I usually like, made everything annoying about Hannah and the book’s shortcomings worse: her trembly voice for Hannah and slow-paced speaking. By the end I was playing at 2.0x speed, which is higher than ever for me—and it seemed a normal pace at that speed!
