Historia
After decades as a long-haul trucker, Finn Murphy left the road and settled in Boulder County, Colorado. Before long he noticed that many of his neighbors were captivated by the prospect of vast riches in “the Hemp Space.” When hemp was legalized, after eighty years in federal exile, Colorado became the center of a hemp growing and processing boom. Figuring he’d harvest some of that easy money, Murphy bought a thirty-six-acre farm. What could go wrong? Well, pretty much everything…

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

The dark side of fundamentalism.
Revisado: 01-21-19
While most fundamentalist groups are not nearly as extreme as the Westover’s family, the structure of control and persuasion is generic to many other congregations. This includes people who identify as Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and others. Anyone with a fundamentalist background will recognize the familiar language and the rhetoric. Tara Westover did an excellent job of illustrating the painful sacrifices she made leave the fold and to be true to her own convictions. She made a remarkable journey from age 17 to 27, with considerable help from many mentors. The most compelling ingredient in her story is her ability to describe her emotions related to her discoveries and her loss of family. Her conclusions are credible and came with much therapy and deep contemplation.
