Historia
Ten years after the eruption of Vesuvius, the surrounding countryside lies buried and barren. But the destroyed cities and luxury villas on the Bay of Naples are not utterly lost. Flavia Albia and her husband Tiberius Manlius are tasked with restoring one villa and identifying any surviving remains. What they unearth is beyond disturbing.

Immerse yourself in the ancient past
Revisado: 04-23-25
A fun and plausible reconstruction of the ancient post eruption area of Stabiae. I have enjoyed the Flavia Albia series as much as the Falco books - but this one has a little twist at the very end which makes me wonder if it will be the last of the series - I hope not! Well read too.

Historia
Naples '44 is an unflinching autobiographical account of a year in Naples after the armistice and Allied landings in Sorrento in 1943. Working as a British counterintelligence officer under the Allied occupation, Lewis documents the rich pageant of life in the city and its surrounding areas. There is suffering and squalor: Criminal gangs are on the rise, along with typhus and black market commerce, and the female population is forced into part-time prostitution. But there is farce and humor, too, witnessed in the Roman uncle paid handsomely simply to appear at funerals.

The tragic, violent, shocking yet also life affirming story of Naples in WW2
Revisado: 12-02-24
This book offers the author’s profound personal observations and insights into the horrors and deprivations of Naples and its surrounding districts during WW2 and the resilience and courage of its occupants under the worst possible circumstances. This book exposes Nazis, Allied forces and the local Italian politicians and mafia as equally corrupt, exploitative and evil in the face of the already intolerable suffering inflicted by war of the ordinary Neapolitan people. For those who, like myself, adore this region of Italy it really is essential reading. Viva Napoli!

Historia
Forty years ago, Steven Smith found a copy of a famous children's book by disgraced author Edith Twyford, its margins full of strange markings and annotations. Wanting to know more, he took it to his English teacher Miss Iles, not realising the chain of events that he was setting in motion. Miss Iles became convinced that the book was the key to solving a puzzle and that a message in secret code ran through all Twyford's novels. Then Miss Iles disappeared on a class field trip, and Steven has no memory of what happened to her.

Interesting and poignant but why???. has the language been censored with bleeps?
Revisado: 07-28-24
An interesting tale but it was incredibly irritating that whenever a character said a swear word it was censored with a bleep! What on earth do they think they are doing - this is not a children’s book - why are adult readers being treated like they are idiots or under aged readers? I have never encountered such knuckle dragging prurient censorship in any other Audible book - this book is British - is this some weird fundamentalist American imposed thing? Such infantile dumbing down of the original text is very disturbing and should have no part in contemporary literature or a reputable international literary supplier such as Audible.

Excellent reding of an intriguing novel
Revisado: 01-22-24
This first part of the series has been available for several years now and I wonder why, given the many positive reviews and requests, none of the other books in the series have been recorded. Unfortunately Audible has a reputation for leaving loyal listeners in the lurch with unfinished series. Does anyone there actually read the reviews? When you have a ready and willing audience why not capitalise on it? That way everyone profits. So please! When you have started recording a series of books get all of their recordings finished!

Historia
Decades earlier Appius Tranquillus Surus wrote his will: it freed his slaves and bequeathed his businesses to them. He left an orchard to the Prisci, a family he was friendly with, on the condition that his freedmen could still take its harvest. The convoluted arrangement has led to a feud between the two families, each of which has its own internal strife. Endless claims and counterclaims lead to violence and even death. Lawyers have given up in exasperation as the case limps on. The original will has disappeared, along with a falsified codicil - and might there be another one?

Another entertaining Flavia Albia story
Revisado: 11-02-23
A bit confusing at times, however this is an appropriate reflection of the way Fatal Legacy paints a picture of Roman family life and its complicated interrelationship with slavery. As usual the author allows us to step into and walk around the ancient city. The narration was very good - expressive and well read.

Ruth is preoccupied with the threatened closure of her department and by her ever-complicated relationship with Nelson. However, she agrees to look at the case. Ruth sees at once that the bones are modern. They are identified as the remains of Emily Pickering, a young archaeology student who went missing in the 1990s. Emily attended a course run by her Cambridge tutor. Suspicion falls on him and also on another course member - Ruth's friend Cathbad.

The best narrator for this series
Revisado: 01-25-23
I really liked the narrator - he had just the right nuances for the many voices. I don’t mind Christian Rodska but dislike Gordon Griffin who makes Falco come across as a wheedling creep. I would be great if the Falco stories recorded by him could be redone by this narrator.

The best sci fi book ever
Revisado: 02-20-22
A mission to save planet Earth from a terrible fate depends upon humanity cooperating with itself - and as if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, then with an alien species. Two unlikely space buddies team up in a story full of suspense, suffering, triumphs and tragedies - but one which enforces the power of what brilliant science can achieve when combined with friendship, goodwill and love. Beautiful narration combined with a wonderful story makes Project Hail Mary a pleasure to listen to and a moving experience.
