Why is glass see-through? What makes elastic stretchy? Why does a paper clip bend? These are the sorts of questions that Mark Miodownik is constantly asking himself. A globally renowned materials scientist, Miodownik has spent his life exploring objects as ordinary as an envelope and as unexpected as concrete cloth, uncovering the fascinating secrets that hold together our physical world.

I enjoyed listening to these tales of the technical adventures of scientist and engineers. ATOMIC ADVENTURES is a well written collection of often interconnect tales of adventures an active technically oriented individual might have had it had good second-hand access too. I wonder how wide the appeal of this type of storytelling goes over with the telephonic American public.

Historia
Best-selling author Mary Roach returns with a new adventure to the invisible realm we carry around inside. Roach takes us down the hatch on an unforgettable tour. The alimentary canal is classic Mary Roach terrain: The questions explored in Gulp are as taboo, in their way, as the cadavers in Stiff and every bit as surreal as the universe of zero gravity explored in Packing for Mars. Why is crunchy food so appealing? Why is it so hard to find words for flavors and smells? Why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? How much can you eat before your stomach bursts?

Foods journey from one-end to the other-end
Revisado: 08-21-17
Would you listen to Gulp again? Why?
Sometime after listening to her book Stiff; Mary Roach's presentations are an appealing blend of facts, science, human-response and humor that kept me listening, thinking and smiling.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The fart pants because of the initial mental image they provoked
Which scene was your favorite?
The man with a hole in his stomach. The doctor who didn't want to heal him and stop his research. And their long history of broken promises
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The fact that dogs have a major difference in food tastes than humans and what the dog-food companies do with this fact. Next time I hear someone tell their dog how good the dog-food tastes, I will be smiling from ear to ear.
Any additional comments?
I plan to watch more closely for results from stool medical exchanges and the government's acknowledgement of this practice for health and well being..

Historia
Within the dark corners of America’s forests grow culinary treasures. Chefs pay top dollar to showcase these elusive and beguiling ingredients on their menus. Whether dressing up a filet mignon with smoky morels or shaving luxurious white truffles over pasta, the most elegant restaurants across the country now feature an abundance of wild mushrooms. Langdon Cook embeds himself in this shadowy subculture, reporting from both rural fringes and big-city eateries.

Professional and amateur mushroom hunters
Revisado: 05-23-17
Where does The Mushroom Hunters rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Midway, I doubt I will seriously hunt mushrooms in the wild, but I am more likely to ask for and try more with meals.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Mushroom Hunters?
The unquenchable demand for exotic mushrooms by NYC.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was surprised at the Sierra Clubs opposition to mushroom picking treating it the same as a shrub, tree or an animal.

Historia
Scholars, journalists, and politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain - "al-Andalus" - as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: It is a myth. In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its "multiculturalism" and "diversity", Fernández-Morera sets the record straight.

What a unbelieveably biased book
Revisado: 05-23-17
What disappointed you about The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise?
It seemed like every paragraph spoke of the cruelty of the Muslims.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Nothing by this author. I will be looking for a more balanced treatment that all parties had flaws with good and bad people in their populations.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment so much I stopped halfway though since the mantra continued to be repeated.

Historia
We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life, supporting diets, economies, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and the humble peppercorn drove the Age of Discovery, so did coffee beans help fuel the Enlightenment and cottonseed help spark the Industrial Revolution. And from the fall of Rome to the Arab Spring, the fate of nations continues to hinge on the seeds of a Middle Eastern grass known as wheat.

The Paths of Seed Evolution
Revisado: 05-23-17
What did you love best about The Triumph of Seeds?
The rationalizing of why a seed has particular properties.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The Java Cucumber seed because it can travel great distances because of its unique aerodynamic shape.
What does Marc Vietor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
There was no stumbling or slowing for non-English words.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, just fascinated by nature's choices.
Any additional comments?
The author's inclusion of family and colleagues made made the book a bit more accepting.
