Good book and worth the listen. Joe paints a nice picture of the grind it takes to be a professional baseball coach at any level. He gets a bit negative at times for my liking about the modern game but one can be empathetic for someone of Joe’s age and experience when dealing with change.

George Will said it best in the Foreword. It is hard to imagine that one person could amass this amount of information in a single lifetime and produce a readable anthology such as this. There is so much detail in this book that you will find yourself “rewinding” 30 seconds often just to help you process. It really is amazing. Every baseball fan has to read/listen to this. I’ve already started Joe’s new book.

As one would expect, Keith Hernandez tells a great story and is a solid narrator of his memoir. Like many former players, Hernandez is, at times, pessimistic about the game today (he admits this throughout the book). Hernandez does a great job of highlighting his accomplishments while staying humble and appreciative for all of those that assisted (his dad, brother, coaches, teammates, etc.) him along the way to becoming an NL MVP. Because he broke into the league in the mid-1970’s, Hernandez and others his age represent a conduit of sorts between the greats of the 1950’s and today. His first hand accounts of his relationships and conversations with baseball greats such as Lou Brock, Ted Williams, and Stan Musial are an example of this. Hernandez has a great story and tells it very well. The only downside is that despite that fact that there are some “flash forwards” to his current career as a Mets broadcaster, the book abruptly ends early in the 1980 season so there really is not much content related to the second half of his playing career in New York. Also, selfishly, as a Seinfeld fan I was really hoping that Hernandez would share some stories about his iconic appearance on the show but he did not. Overall, as a baseball fan, the book is well worth the purchase!

One of my first memories of Pete Rose was seeing him on the cover of Sports Illustrated the week that his lifetime ban from baseball was announced. I am just young enough to really have no memory of seeing him play, much less in his prime. Because of this, I learned a ton about Rose including just how great of a player he was while simultaneously being sub par person. Overall, makes for a great story. Very informative and worth the Audible listen.

You might need to be either a Yankees fan or just an all around baseball fan to enjoy this book. Either way, it is well worth checking out. Paul O’Neill tells a great story and the narrator makes it a great listen. Not being a Yankee fan, I really never realized how accomplished O’Neill was so I enjoyed learning of his accolades. His stories of being with the Reds early in his career were very interesting as well.

Andy Martino provides a great version of the 2017 Astro’s cheating scandal which is why I bought this book for my son and downloaded for myself to listen to. I was pleasantly surprised with the history of sign stealing provided in the text as well. This book is packed with great information not only on the scandal, but about many of individuals that were involved in the organization as well. Super interesting and Martino did a great job reading it in the Audible version.

Few people probably understand the grind that it takes for most to live out their dream of making (and staying) in the MLB. Feinstein paints a brilliant picture of the road traveled by thousands trying to fulfill their dream of “making it” in baseball. The best part is that Feinstein profiles people in all walks of baseball from players and managers to umpires and grounds crew. Bottom line, there is no simple path to MLB, and Feinstein should be commended for compiling a great collection of stories for the rest of us to enjoy and appreciate. I would consider this a must read for anyone that is interested in the detailed realities of life in all levels of professional baseball.

After I started listening to this book, I ordered a paper copy for my father as this was his era and I knew he would appreciate the story. The themes of friendship and war-type comrade are what my father appreciated most. For me, it was the in depth and first hand historical account that was most appreciated. Chick tells a great story and it is well worth the read or the listen!

I have been a CC fan since he was traded to the Brewers in 2008 and led them into the playoffs on his back for the first time in over 25 years. Always knowing he was an outstanding baseball player, I never knew that he had such personal struggles throughout his entire life. CC really holds nothing back about everything he went through as a kid, a ball player, and an amazing talent. CC is more humbled by his talents than many, and this book is a perfect blend of stories from an extraordinary career, yet stories of personal and untold struggles with alcohol, deaths of loved ones, and racial inequities. As one reads or listens to the book, you can feel and appreciate CC’s honestly and humility as he describes the details of his successes and challenges. From the pure baseball side, CC paints an excellent picture of “the grind” of being a professional player and how hard one must work to build on their talents if they want to continue to perform at top notch. For those of you that are thinking about purchasing on Audible, one thing to note is that the narrator, Guy Lockard, tells CC’s story with great emotion and keeps you interested the entire time. As a bonus, it is pretty cool that CC himself reads the first chapter. Great book, you won’t regret purchasing it!
