endings are hard. the author does a decent job wrapping things up. wasn't super satisfying but it at least didn't leave a bunch of loose ends. It was all right.

the story drug to a stop. I got about 2/3 of the way in and at this point he's just forging armor that's slightly different in the same fire pit that he's been forging armor in for the last 13 hours. I actually think the author is using AI to help fluff the story. it's because of something one of the characters says. If you want to avoid spoilers don't read any further. if you read the first book and I assume you have you know that they wanted to make a monster theme tavern to fit with the dark atmosphere and the demon Queen's appearance. so they finally name the tavern. they name the tavern something that fits perfectly with the monster theme and the demon Queens appearance. however the characters attributed to being on the haunted Street. that's some AI stuff right there. there were a few other suspicious comments but that's the one that really stood out.

main character is a pig

Main character saves a girl. She has nowhere to go and feels obligated to sleep with him. knowing she has nowhere else to go he still accepts. Main character acts all upset that everyone thinks that she's only on there for one thing but then gives him to her advances. It's not even like a romance slow burn. First night. She even says she's doing it for reassurance.

What happened?

So either the author has dementia or someone else wrote this book and only kind of read the other books. seriously it's not even worth reading. The inconsistencies are extremely jarring and it feels like the main character has actually gotten weaker since the end of the first book.

Sociopathic MC

Main character seems sociopathic and narcissistic. Threatens children, manipulates his ex-girlfriend and seems overall like a horrible human being. Never struggles with those thoughts. Had to stop listening to the book when he was making plans to hurt a kid.

The Land: Side quests

So at the end of the last book there were enemies from every conceivable angle. he's got a bug bear army to contend with, he's got a horde of ravenous insects ready to devour his land, and his Kingdom would likely want his town destroyed if they ever found out what he was doing. they ended the last book saying he needed to make alliances. he ended up spending the entire book running side quests. from the way the book ended I'm not sure he will be going off to make alliances at all.
the whole thing felt like if you were to go to something that called itself a horse race and all they ended up doing was showing off animals and maybe doing some tricks and jumps but no racing happened.

Weird turn.

I've noticed an odd turn in the MC of this series. He's always been a bit selfish on the surface but then his actions will contradict his selfish thoughts or words and everything is alright. Now it seems like I just read an entire book where the world is falling apart and the MC only wants to do the bare minimum to help. Not to mention making a decision to not help someone in need because he essentially doesn't know the guy well enough. At this point I'm listening to the series because of the sunken cost.
The main character has nothing they want, nothing they need, and no drive to do things for the good of others.

a bittersweet story

the story was extremely well written. it was something spectacular and yet I look at it from an objective viewpoint and find that in the end it meant nothing. on a smaller scale I suppose that the main characters did achieve their stated objectives but not in a way I think either would hope for. this was a story of constant hardship and strife. this was a story of loss and regret. more than anything this was a story of those with little to no power struggling. the author did an amazing job making me feel connected to each of the characters. everyone felt real and emotions felt raw. I do feel a bit drained after listening to this though.
this was a good and powerful read. I feel like everyone that reads this will take something different away from it. just know if you end up picking up this book it can be emotionally taxing.

Jake's abandoned market

First chunk of the book is decent but then Jake decides to take a break from being a merchant. The book stays solid for a bit but then the second half of the book begins. I'll blame the second half of the book on head trauma. Jake forgets about many of his abilities that seem like they'd easily solve the problem he's in. Jake does horrible things despite alternate paths being available. There is no market. He's no longer a bystander in a messed up situation like the story begins. Now he's a greater good hero saving worlds and killing anyone in the way of his goals or at least causing permanent brain damage.
