Historia
When Professor Irene Hyde's Monday morning lecture at St Luke's University is rudely interrupted by a man named the Doctor, it's the beginning of an adventure she could never have dreamt possible. Soon they are hurtling backwards in time to 1806, where the crew of the trading ship Favorite, led by the 'Ice King' himself, Frederic Tudor, are being picked off, one by one, by a hideous monster that lurks in the shadows.

Weak female character development
Revisado: 01-22-24
My eyes rolled and rolled and rolled right over the female character's deference to men. The intelligent, doctorate holding, principled woman in this story discovers that maybe others should defer to her. But she settles for a pat on the head.

Absent from this story is the term "abuse." And I am soooo relieved not to see or hear that word. Somehow it became a gauntlet to throw.
The story is told in terms of power, dominance, and agency.

Nick Collins vows to uncover the truth behind an accusation of murder, but as the trial progresses, the only truth he discovers is that his big-city client doesn’t stand a chance against small-town beliefs. If the accused is found guilty until proven innocent, the real killer could still be out there, and there won’t be any heroes left to catch them.

Loved it!
Revisado: 02-21-23
I'm always in need of stories around 60 minutes to fill a commute. This one was exciting, gripping. It concludes nice and tidy, just as any good story should. Exposition is well paced. The plot unfolds on a logical path for a common person. The one minor snaffu: The suspect, while en route to see THEIR CHILD'S BIRTH, was accused of going far off-road to commit a time-consuming, labor-intensive murder. Even Dexter would find this decision foolish if not tacky.

Most audible original shorts, I find, are mildly entertaining. To my delight, Cold Strangers piles mysteries upon mysteries upon mysteries. Answering every question brought forth, the story feels complete. The pace is steady, No part feels rushed or drawn out. The characters are likeable. Their behaviors make sense. Not once did I roll my eyes. Genre seems to be Mystery.
Terrific narration. The accents feel natural. The tone is consistent with the story.

Yehoshuah cares for Pakko’s camel and shares with him the knowledge of the precious gifts he received from three wise men. Only a cursory knowledge of Christianity is needed to enjoy these stories. It reads like a fairytale or a legend. Wisdom first surfacing on a precocious, innocent child is delightful to witness. This audio calls for another listen.

The story stands alone just fine.
Revisado: 01-05-22
The story felt complete and satisfying. Further elaborations of the ending would be boringly redundant. No book 2 necessary. My issue is with how dumb and naïve the protagonist is. Listen to the attorney, dang it.

Well Done!
Revisado: 11-07-21
I love a good apocalypse story. This one was more sad and thoughtful than thrilling and dystopian. The story lingers in my mind. The focus is on one girl’s family and … yes, there is loss because it’s an apocalypse … it feels more intimate because it’s about a girl and her family. Apocalypse is just background.

Dive into sci-fi
Revisado: 11-07-21
So, the reader is asked to buy in from the get-go and is introduced to strange vocabulary. Just go with it. What is this story about? Colonialism, freedom, and “helping” a people who’d rather The League (subtle haha) get off their lawn. The characters are POC which gives the story extra special dimensions. Tobias Bucknell is an incredible writer. He never allows monoliths to describe human beings — soldiers are noble, the elderly are wise, the rich are greedy, the poor are lazy — because individually we are more than the sum of the categories imposed on us.
