Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Captivating adult fairy tale
Revisado: 12-12-22
Slightly grumpy septuagenarian meets underachieving, but soft hearted millennial. Great compelling story of loss, quests and wandering octopus. Couldn’t stop listening.

Historia
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

A nice addition to the Three Pines collection
Revisado: 12-09-22
Another exciting adventure for M. et Mme. Gamache. I thought this outing was quite entertaining (one of the in recent memory) with lots of obscure historical references and enough twists to keep everyone guessing. M. Bathurst does another excellent job of bringing all of Three Pines family to life. Already looking forward to the next outing!

Historia
The call comes at midnight. It looks like a tragic and petty murder - a rising star in San Francisco's legal firmament found shot in a dark alley. But for homicide lieutenant Abe Glitsky, the crime cuts horribly close to home - unknown to anyone, the victim was his daughter. Seething, Glitsky leans hard on his only suspect - a homeless heroin addict found lingering over his daughter's body, with her jewelry in his pocket and a smoking gun in his hand.

I found the journal at work. Well, I don't know if you'd call it work, but that's where I found it. It's the lost journal of Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest inventors and visionaries ever. Before he died in 1943, he kept a notebook filled with spectacular claims and outrageous plans.

Chip and Pete's interdimensional adventure
Revisado: 08-06-19
This is just good fun. I listened to the opening, thought, "nah, I'm not going to make it to the end of this one", then proceeded to listen (virtually) without stopping to the entire book. It's an infectious story, told by the author. Mr. Dircks is the perfect reader for his book. It's an enjoyable romp through the multi-verse. I'm gonna go open some doors.

Historia
Autumn has come to Cedar County. It's harvest time. The trees and vines in the orchards and vineyards are heavy with ripening fruit. For the tourists flocking to the tasting rooms of the region's vineyards, the landscapes and seascapes provide an elaborate tapestry of rich colors and textures. However, there is one discordant note in this pastoral splendor: The crumpled body of an international wine maven has been discovered in a steeply terraced vineyard of merlot grapes.

Ray Elkins takes a wine tour
Revisado: 07-21-17
I really enjoyed this installment of the Sheriff's adventures. I think it's one of Stander's best efforts to date, capturing a good portion of the flavor of the northern Michigan winter country while continuing the evolution of Ray's relationships with the characters in Cedar county, especially the women in his life. I found the narration a touch stilted, but it didn't detract from the experience and I'm looking forward to the next installments.

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

Fascinating ability to get inside Britt-Marie's thoughts
Revisado: 03-08-17
I was enthralled by Backman's, A Man Called Ove, though a little concerned that Britt-Marie would be a rehash of the surly protagonist of the earlier book. I needn't have been concerned. Though drawn from a similar well, Britt-Marie is still plenty entertaining. Blackman does an amazing job of capturing the essence of Britt's personality and weaves her into the lives of a small town down on its luck. The differences between Britt and Ove are nuanced, but real. Just like the first book, once I started I could not stop.

In Currency, Wood has pulled off a first novel that captures the listener with a pause-registering adventure, while it addresses head-on the most pressing and intense global economic, military and political issues of our very challenging current times. Wood's real world experience on both Wall Street and at the center of the US Military Special Operations world, combine with his love of history and command of current global issues, to create a story that is as intense and gripping as it is timely.

Story line takes a turn down an unexpected path
Revisado: 06-11-16
This book begins with an interesting premise, hidden gold tied to the American revolution, early days of the nation and high seas adventures from an even earlier time. I do like a good conspiracy, and the characters capture your interest. The plot unfolds as a search for hidden treasure, with time shifting and glimpses of some critical moments in history. The narrative takes a sharp turn and devolves into a diatribe against entitlements and deficit spending that overshadows the story.

He doesn't get many visitors, but a body found near his home has drawn police attention to his front door. The victim is not one of the many illegal immigrants who risk their lives to cross the border just south of the Hole, but is instead a member of one of the local Indian tribes.

Different take on western mystery
Revisado: 05-15-16
I'm hooked! This was a journey into a different west than others I've taken. Refreshing characters, well plotted, plenty(!) of local culture. It was a great, but too brief, diversion. I can't wait for the next installment in Rodeo's adventures....

Half Inuit and half outsider, Edie Kiglatuk is the best guide in her corner of the Arctic. But as a woman, she gets only grudging respect from the elders who rule her isolated community on Ellesmere Island. When a man is shot and killed while out on an “authentic” Arctic adventure under her watch, the murder attracts the attention of police sergeant Derek Palliser. As Edie sets out to discover what those tourists were really after, she is shocked by the suicide of someone very close to her.

Murder in the frozen north...
Revisado: 04-12-16
This is a good book, well written and engaging. The plot is intriguing and serves as a framework on which to hang a wealth of detail about life above (well above) the arctic circle among the Inuit. Ms. Reading has an odd cadence to her narration. I found it distracting for a few minutes, but then was swept up in the narrative. Her voice is pleasing, and she is very precise and evocative in her reading of the book. In the end, I found her to be an excellent narrator and I'm looking forward to moving on to the next volume.
