Historia
Julie Weathers isn't sure if she's running away or starting over, but moving to a remote island off the coast of Maine feels right for someone with reasons to flee her old life. The sun-washed, sea-stormed speck of land seems welcoming, the lobster plentiful, and the community close and tightly knit. She finds friends in her nearest neighbor and Callum, a man who appears to be using the island for the same thing as she: escape. But soon she comes to suspect that she may have traded one place shrouded in trouble for another.

Lots of loose ends
Revisado: 01-31-24
It was a really great story. Full and flushed out remarkably well. I just wish there was an epilogue or something. Five more minutes to tie up all the loose ends would have been all it needed to get 5 stars

It was great, but incomplete?
Revisado: 10-08-22
Loved the premise. Gripping and interesting and, as someone familiar with the CPS system, it’s VERY realistic and highly probable. The reviews that say otherwise are clearly made by people very ignorant to the system and to children in general. But...there was no ending? Nothing was wrapped up. No problems were solved. Literally every single component of the story is left in the midst of its occurrence. It’s not even up for interpretation because there’s not enough to interpret. No idea why this book is so highly rated when it’s really only a fraction of a story

I want to finish it but I can’t get past the main character!!
Revisado: 08-09-22
Steadman is a great author and voice actress. The narrative structure is impressive and the story is fascinating. But the main character is so unbelievably frustrating it becomes unbearable.
She feels constant guilt and constant paranoia and it grows and festers. And the primary cause for ALL of it is that she simply will not tell her literal partner in crime (who is also her husband) the only important things that happen. And several times in every chapter, she reminds us that she “should tell him” (but she just...doesn’t???). Meanwhile, he confesses everything to her. Including his own mistakes. And some objectively poor decisions he’s made.
I got about 80% through, just hanging onto my desire to know what comes next and how the story wraps up. I’ve waited and waited for her to just TELL HIM. But I just cannot get past her grating absurdity. At the beginning when her husband would get upset with her and yell at her, I thought he was a jerk. But heck, I’ve been screaming at her through my phone! At this point she’s just plain stupid.

Historia
The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. But as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping new history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs. On the eve of World War II, Germany was a pharmaceutical powerhouse, and companies such as Merck and Bayer cooked up cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, to be consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to millions of German soldiers.

How do you make a book about drugs and the Holocaust about Pro-Capitalist Propaganda??
Revisado: 06-25-22
The majority of the book is fine but I can’t help but assume it’s poorly researched due to the random instances of propaganda. From the very first sentence it for some reason equates the problem of Nazism with socialism. Which is completely irrelevant and has nothing to do with the Third Reich or Hitler or drugs at all. Hard to tell if anything in here could be true if the main takeaway is obviously not

The narrator is impossible to listen to
Revisado: 05-26-22
This story is so wonderful, it’s a shame they opted for this narrator. I’ve listened to a few narrations from her in the past and they are all just as frustrating to engage with.
At the very least, she could keep her volume consistent. There is nothing more annoying than having to rewind several times to hear the same line or entire excerpt over and over. Or adjusting and readjusting the volume. In the same sentence she’s whispering (for no apparent reason) and then SCREAMING. I listen to audiobooks when I don’t have the means to manually hold something in my hand while I want to read. I am cleaning or I’m at work or I’m driving or in the gym. This takes all the convenience out of audiobooks.
A lesser grievance, though still annoying is her tone. It is constantly whiny and far too emotional no matter what component of the story she is telling. It’s impossible to distinguish what is important vs what is not because of this.
I wound up just getting the book from my local library as I wanted to read the story but I could not deal with this audio

Historia
The flu pandemic of 1918 took millions of souls within a few short weeks. Except it wasn't flu, and death gave them back. Seventeen-year-old Ella copes the best she can by caring for her war-injured father, scrubbing the floors, and slaying the undead that attack the locals. Like rats, these vermin spread pestilence with every bite. Ella's world collides with another when she nearly decapitates a handsome stranger - one who is very much alive.

Well written but nonsensical premise
Revisado: 04-13-22
The story is very creative and the prose and imagery are beautiful. I would love this as its own story except for the fact that the two plot lines (cinderella meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer) are basically antithetical. The combo is forced & doesn’t make any sense. She is the sole person in the village that everyone calls upon to SLAY their greatest threat, why the heck is she so meek that she willingly submits to abuse from her step mother and step sisters? Girl is a killer!! She accessorizes with a freakin SWORD! Yet we’re meant to accept that she’s “trapped” as servant girl in a home that has been hers for her entire life? She could literally just say no. It doesn’t even need to be some immense rebellion. Just...say no. She could literally just not let them beat her. Or tie her up. She’s obviously much stronger than them. They have NOTHING over her. Sorry but you can’t do Cinderella as some grand heroine if the evil step mother & step sisters have nothing over her. She owes them nothing. It’s completely antithetical to the whole point of the trope.

Michaelides is the MASTER of psychological thriller
Revisado: 06-18-21
I read the silent patient several months ago and have been eagerly awaiting the release of The Maidens almost ever since. Alex Michaelides is a brilliant storyteller, as he clearly understands the human psyche extremely well. The only reason I deduct a star is the epilogue. If there isn’t a sequel to this book, it’s a deeply frustrating way to leave it
