While the stories are relatively brief, there isn't a wasted word. Fast, fun storytelling at its best. Now I'm gonna grab Book 3.

Historia
By 1920, the movies had suddenly become America's new favorite pastime and one of the nation's largest industries. Never before had a medium possessed such power to influence; yet Hollywood's glittering ascendancy was threatened by a string of headline-grabbing tragedies - including the murder of William Desmond Taylor, the popular president of the Motion Picture Directors Association, a legendary crime that has remained unsolved until now.

Humanity is cyclical, or is it spiraling?
Revisado: 10-18-24
I was struck by the similarity to modern Hollywood that was exposed by the "Me Too" movement while listening to this book. It's a sad thing that so much of the art we love has come from such darkness. This is the most comprehensive book I've found on the cast of this era, particularly in relation to Taylor's murder. Just fascinating.

Fascinating history of TV variety shows in general
Revisado: 10-11-24
I loved the exploration of the variety show genre, and the early history of the Star Wars craze. I liked the balancing act towards the end: not everyone hated the show, and for some, it was the only Star Wars they knew. I like the calling out of Lucas for how he used up "friends" until they weren't yes men, but at the end it seemed to come back around to some Polly-Annish idea that Lucas cares about anything but money. Well, he also cares about absolute control, so I guess there's that. But references to The Last Jedi make no sense because Lucas had no input on those movies. They're not "his."

Historia
Opening with the young Clark Kent on a date, this novel takes an entirely fresh approach to the emergence of his superpowers and the start of his newspaper career, following him from rural 1930s Kansas across America to Hollywood in its golden age and then to New York City. He meets a worldly Lois Lane and conniving political boss Lex Luthor, and begins his battles against criminal masterminds, mad scientists, and super villains inspired by fascists.

Fantastic world-building
Revisado: 05-06-24
To like this book, at all, you must approach it with eyes that have never seen Superman. Ears that have never heard Superman. And all that he influenced, culturally. Then, you can judge the book on its own merit. Casting the origin of Superman against the true crime 1930's setting is a stroke of genuis. This alone makes this book one of the best Superman stories I've ever read (lifelong fan of nearly 50 years). You must leave the icon at the door, however. He isn't here. At all. Tom suffers from a common malady liberal boomer writers suffer(ed) from, and that's self-inserting "enlightenment" (leftist dogma) into dialogue at random points. It adds nothing to the story, other than to remind us this book is cynical. That being said, Superman sans icon status, sans pure optimism, works in this story and this story alone. But not by much. As a period sci-fi action/crime story, it's still a fantastic read.

I can honestly say this was a surprisingly good book. The story is a classic (adapted into an Alfred Hitchcock silent film a century ago). But the performance was top notch. For a free audiobook, that was truly surprising. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen!

Historia
For decades, wrestling was shrouded in secrecy. It had larger-than-life personalities, bone-crunching physicality and jaw-dropping theatrics, but backstage, it was an industry devoid of outsiders. Then in 1999, after working together on a special for MTV, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turned to 26-year-old television writer Brian Gewirtz and asked, “You ever consider writing for WWE?” That question, and its answer, would have a profound effect on both of their lives for years to come. There's Just One Problem is a story about perseverance, tenacity, and steel chairs.

Behind the scenes from the attitude into the PG era.
Revisado: 02-18-24
Where to begin? First, the book is fun. And it's endearing at the right moments. It's never salacious, however, and entirely steers clear of any of the "adult" drama that's occurred over the years. This is where one problem comes in: with all that's come out about Vince, the lighthearted stories of him proposing sexual themed vignettes doesn't land as it would have 2-3 years ago. It actually made me say out loud to my car: "How did you freaks not see this all along?" But the answer is inside the almost insanely dictatorial regime displayed in the stories. Again: how couldn't they see? He ruled with an iron fist and even if you were "allowed to disagree," doing so always led to repercussions. No one ever stops and wonders what concussions and cocktails of anabolic hormones / drugs are doing to this old man. BUT IF YOU CAN put the grim reality of Vince aside, the book is still great. And the stories are very entertaining to me, a lifelong wrestling fan. The narrator does a great job in his delivery, delivering the right tone and emotion conveyed in the book. But he flubs SEVERAL names SEVERAL times, and it's a little annoying when he does it. Still: read it. It's a lot of fun.
