Four girls. Four girls skating home, both sides of the road, fearless. Four girls at the mouth of an infinite ocean, sugared and salted with sand and seawater, the tide licking their sunburned feet. This summer, they’re going to disappear.

Moving, Unexpected, and Delightful!
Revisado: 03-28-24
This book was awesome! The characters are likable, interesting and compelling. The story somehow feels familiar and warm while also being magical and poignant. Having a Spotify playlist that goes along with the story was so cool, too! Why don’t more authors do this?

Good, but not great
Revisado: 02-08-11
Interesting enough concept (Sherlock Holmes mentoring feisty teenage girl) but the story just wasn't as compelling or gripping as I was hoping.

Interesting story, but I never got into it.
Revisado: 02-08-11
Interesting dystopia story (disease, food controlled by corrupt government, "windup" people and creatures), but I never really got into it. Some graphic scenes were hard to listen to.

Quick read, and effective message.

Very quick read with an overall very effective message about the importance of being someone who adapts to change. Major take home quote "What would I do if I wasn't afraid?" I liked hearing the interview with the author at the end as well.

Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

Historia
Griffin has been tooling around for nearly a year with his father’s ashes in the trunk, but his mother is very much alive and not shy about calling on his cell phone. She does so as he drives down to Cape Cod, where he and his wife, Joy, will celebrate the marriage of their daughter Laura’s best friend. For Griffin this is akin to driving into the past, since he took his childhood summer vacations here, his parents’ respite from the hated Midwest.
