Historia
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

Historia
For 40 years, Colony 3245.12 has been Ofelia’s home. On this planet far away in space and time from the world of her youth, she has lived and loved, weathered the death of her husband, raised her one surviving child, lovingly tended her garden, and grown placidly old. And it is here that she fully expects to finish out her days - until the shifting corporate fortunes of the Sims Bancorp Company dictates that Colony 3245.12 is to be disbanded, its residents shipped off, deep in cryo-sleep, to somewhere new and strange and not of their choosing.

Alien contact with a twist
Revisado: 08-16-22
This is an alien contact story with a twist. It is an excellent story. The main character is an old woman, and I have not checked, but I think the author must be an old woman to portray so perfectly how it feels to be an old woman. I'm an old woman, and she is right on. Don't worry, it is not all about her. It is also about the aliens, and they are great, too. I could not put it down. Start to finish without stopping. Great book!

Autobiography of a man who did what he loved.
Revisado: 07-09-22
This is the autobiography of a man who fell in love with meat cutting at the age of 10, and fought hard to join the family meat cutting business. Then he grew the business, and this is the story of that as well. He also gives considerable insight into how the meat business works, from the farm to the consumer, and everything in between.

Historia
Most of the 25,000 genes we possess are the same for all of us. Compatibility genes are those that vary most from person to person and give each of us a unique molecular signature. These genes determine both the extent to which we are susceptible to a vast range of illnesses and the different ways each of us fights disease.

Historia
The title of Ravenmaster is a serious title indeed, and after decades of serving the Queen, Yeoman Warder Christopher Skaife took on the added responsibility of caring for the infamous ravens. In The Ravenmaster, he lets listeners in on his life as he feeds his birds raw meat and biscuits soaked in blood, buys their food at Smithfield Market, and ensures that these unusual, misunderstood, and utterly brilliant corvids are healthy, happy, and ready to captivate the four million tourists who flock to the Tower every year.

Utterly wonderful!
Revisado: 01-04-19
Not to be missed. The Ravenmaster tells the story of his life, and much about the ravens themselves. Also history, storytelling, and more. It is spellbinding, Of course, I'm a raven lover as well, but there is more than just that in this one. It is a real treat to listen to, and I shall doubtless replay it many times.

Hardening her heart, the young woman sets out to claim what is owed and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk - grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh - Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered.

Voice too soft to hear much of the time
Revisado: 09-08-18
I shall have to return this, as the reader is so quiet that I only heard snatches. I turned up the volume all the way, but could not hear enough. Also, there are multiple female characters, and all were read with the same voice, which made it hard to figure out which character was speaking.

Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor John Medina?
No
Has Your Best Brain: The Science of Brain Improvement turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Would you be willing to try another one of Professor John Medina’s performances?
No
Did Your Best Brain: The Science of Brain Improvement inspire you to do anything?
go out and weed the garden...do my chores...whatever else I can think of to do after I turned this one off.
Any additional comments?
The small amount of information is sprinkled sparsely among metaphores, mostly derived from movies and TV. I'd much prefer he leave out the entertainment industry, quit trying to be a star, and give an informational lecture. One with a lot more information content. If you know nothing about the brain, spend lots of time with movies and TV, and enjoy being talked down to, go ahead and listen to this one.
