Historia
Jean Antoinette Poussin, the woman who would become known as Madame de Pompadour, was a middle-class girl of uncertain parenthood who became one of many in a long line of King Louis XV’s mistresses before she died at the age of 42. While none of that stands out on its own when it comes to French history and royalty, historians have labeled her “no ordinary king’s mistress.... She made and unmade ministers, she selected ambassadors, she appointed generals, [and] she conferred pensions and places."

The author gets some very basic facts wrong.
Revisado: 07-26-20
In Chapter 4 he states, "Meanwhile, several other notable figures played key roles in life at court, including Louis XV's three unmarried sisters, who were a constant presence at court. These three women--Adelaide, Sophie, and Victoire-- were often involved in court intrigues and manipulations themselves."
LOUIS XV DID NOT HAVE ANY SISTERS. Not a single one. Perhaps the author is confusing Louis XV's daughters for his sisters?
Who knows what else he's confused about. Don't waste your money. I'm sorry I wasted mine.

Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series - as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

Narrator is UNBEARABLE
Revisado: 07-14-14
What disappointed you about A Dance with Dragons?
Hard to listen to with this narrator.
If you’ve listened to books by George R. R. Martin before, how does this one compare?
They're all equally disappointing because they all have this same narrator. AUDIBLE, please do yourself and your listeners a favor. Please find another narrator.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
When it comes to dialogue, this narrator fails. He's hard to understand because he often gives his characters lisps and wheezes and spittle. Many of the inhabitants of Westeros sound like they came straight out of a Lucky Charms commercial. Well, Lucky Charms + 900 years old + emphysema. He has particular problems voicing Daenerys Targaryen; she sounds like Spongebob Squarepants on helium.
He calls attention to himself constantly with his cringeworthy accents. He detracts from the story.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
When this narrator is just reading he's not so bad. The moment he launches into dialogue, though, it's over.
Any additional comments?
Please find another narrator. Please at least give us a choice.

Historia
The bitter conflict between England and France we call The Hundred Years War, and lasting 116 years between 1337 and 1453, was fought over claims by the English kings to the French throne. By the end of this titanic struggle, it can fairly be said that the Middle Ages had come to an end.

Well written, poorly read
Revisado: 12-19-08
I enjoy books about English history. The battles King Edward and The Black Prince won when they were greatly outnumbered are very interesting to me. I really appreciated all of the details this author gives.
However... Whoever read this book can't speak French. It was painful to listen to him try. There are hundreds and hundreds of French names and phrases in the text; not having a bilingual narrator is irresponsible.
