Historia
Three months have passed since Richard Jury was left bereft and guilt- ridden after his lover's tragic auto accident, and he is now more wary than ever. He is deeply suspicious when requested on a case far out of his jurisdiction in an outlying village, where a young woman has been murdered behind the local pub. The only witness is the establishment's black cat, who gives neither crook nor clue as to the girl's identity or her killer's.

Not as good as usual but still okay
Revisado: 04-07-18
What did you like best about The Black Cat? What did you like least?
I read this when it first came out and I didn't remember not liking it as much as I thought. The story had some of our usual favourite characters, but still not enough to make this a great story.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The animals talking to each other and having such an impact on the story was just cringe-worthy.
I've like her occasional uses of animals in the past, but this was just over the top.
What didn’t you like about John Lee’s performance?
Ruthven is pronounce Riven not Rooth-ven!!! Grimes even makes a big deal of this mispronunciation in many of her earlier novels.

Historia
Two thousand people go missing in Alaska every year. They vanish in the middle of mountain footraces, on fishing boats in the Bering Sea, on small planes in the Bush. Now a geologist known for going walkabout with his rock hammer has disappeared from the Suulutaq Mine in the Park. Was it deliberate? An accident? Foul play? Kate Shugak may be the only person who can find out. But for the fact that Kate, too, is among the missing....

I don't understand the love for Kate
Revisado: 09-16-17
Would you recommend Less Than a Treason to your friends? Why or why not?
Not now that I've read/listened to the whole series...it's too much of the same thing.
Any additional comments?
I don't understand the love for Kate Shugak either by all of the other characters or by the readers. I found very little evidence in the books that she's earned it. She's not nice, treats people like crap and just does her own thing with very little regard for anyone else. And she's always right. Yes, we know that she's beautiful beyond belief (although she just doesn't know it - sigh) and that she can have sex anywhere, anytime and in the most incredible positions. Also sigh. Oh, and with a single look from under her eyelashes, she makes every man weak in the knees. She's also one of those annoying people who think her dog has a right to be everywhere.
In this book she runs away - again - and everyone thinks that's just fine. Adults don't deal that way - selfish teenagers do.
What's kept me reading and listening for all of the books (although, for me this is the last one) is that I like a lot of the other characters and the descriptions of daily life - historically and present time - has been well-told and interesting. It's not enough for me anymore.

Historia
It is a cold January morning, and Shetland lies beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a splash of color on the frozen ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbor, Catherine Ross. The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man - loner and simpleton Magnus Tait.

Narrator can't get Perez's name right
Revisado: 09-16-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Sure it was an interesting story and I enjoyed most of the characters.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
There were a few issues around the fact that this book is based in Scotland and the narrator is English, but beyond that I found myself correcting him every single time he mispronounced the main character's name...that's just the worst in an audio book. His pronunciation of Perez was pathetic and annoying and detracted from the book for me in a very big way.

Historia
Declaring he needs to clear his conscience, a dying man walks into Scotland Yard and confesses that he killed his cousin five years earlier during the Great War. When Inspector Ian Rutledge presses for details, the man evades his questions, revealing only that he hails from a village east of London. With little information and no body to open an official inquiry, Rutledge begins to look into the case on his own. Less than two weeks later, the alleged killer’s body is found floating in the Thames, a bullet in the back of his head.

I like these stories but...
Revisado: 08-02-16
What made the experience of listening to The Confession: An Inspector Ian Rutledge Mystery the most enjoyable?
I really can't stand Simon Prebble's Scottish accent - it's awful.
What three words best describe Simon Prebble’s performance?
Generally good, just can't do a Scottish accent at all (I know, more than 3 words!!)

Historia
Hardly a day goes by when nine-year-old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions to walking trees to winged beasts in the woods to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village.

New narrator not bad, but...

Any additional comments?
it drove me nuts that he kept say "C - S - I - S" instead of "See-Sis" which is how we actually say it in Canada. We don't spell out the acronym at all. With all of these books set in Canada, it made me wonder why someone didn't correct him.
