Historia
In Alma Alexander’s enthralling new novel, Simonis is a woman who lived many lives before rising to the top – a helpless child in circus performances, an accomplished courtesan and spy, a heretic who sheltered men thought to be damned for what they believed.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Atmospheric and eerie
Revisado: 07-24-21
It takes a bit of listening to discover the story, but that is the nature of a labyrinth. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys atmosphere and rhythm in their stories.

Think Mad Magazine when selecting this book
Revisado: 07-26-19
Different works are good in different ways. This had the feel of a book that started with a writing prompt. It's very entertaining. It's also shallow, but that seems intentional and is well done like a Saturday Night Live sketch.

Kept me Guessing
Revisado: 05-28-19
The story was a bit tough to suspend disbelief in parts, but the characterizations were well done. I enjoyed it and never figured out the answer to the mystery.

An excellent novel and a good holiday read
Revisado: 12-30-18
The series keeps developing in interesting ways. This book is expertly read. There is a bit of a different style to the storytelling in this book. It was weird at first, but it worked well. The story is set in the Christmas to New Year's period without being gimmicky.

Another solid performance by Bujold and Gardner.

You've got to love Miles. There are a few too many convenient coincidences in the plot to call it one of the best though.

Nice Backstory
Revisado: 05-07-16
This was almost a five star review. I found the story hard to put down. The reader was very good. The action was well written, but there were sentences throughout that strick me as clunky during exposition sections.

Story Good, Performance less so
Revisado: 11-16-15
Would you listen to High Stakes again? Why?
I might listen to High Stakes again, but some parts of the performance are less than ideal.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Geoffrey Howard?
No. The narrator seems unable to pair an American accent with a feminine voice. Every time the story turned to the romance his performance ruined the mood.

Good Book, Flawed Digital Transfer
Revisado: 09-03-13
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I heartily enjoyed the story an found it difficult to "put down". Francis fans will not be surprised by the excellent pacing of the text.
Any additional comments?
This digital recording was clearly made from a less than prefect tape. There are many places where it speeds up and slows down. I was willing to listen to these spots because the story and reading were excellent, but it is a less than optimal listening experience.
