Painful, very painful man
Revisado: 11-14-21
Too much Deus ex Machina. Unrealistic characters whose skill development more closely mirrored a Dungeons & Dragons game than the months of training that would realistically be required. Unnecessarily dramatic romantic scenes. The lieutenant consistently made stupid tactical decisions in spite of good information.
The narrator's pauses and breaks fell in unnatural positions giving the presentation a disjuncted feeling. This also set my teeth on edge on edge making it painful to listen to And difficult to get immersed.

Horrific story surprise ending
Revisado: 09-26-21
I couldn't put it down. A well told story with a horrific plot. I don't normally do horror stories, but I was excited to hear Joshua Jackson reading a book and was not disappointed. His nasal like and somewhat somber tone perfectly illustrated the protagonist: A recovering alcoholic, battered and exhausted from carrying the weight of countless murder investigations.

Wait! It Mightn't Be What You Think--

A wonderful dystopian story
Revisado: 10-23-19
This is a captivating story with amazing, lifelike characters. Claire Danes' was perfectly selected to represent Offred, the narrator. The 'emotional' breaks in Ms. Danes' voice forces the listener to sympathize with the plight of the dispossessed as you can imagine this is actually Offred telling you her story.
The theme I loved in this story is that 'it has happened before, it will happen again.' In the Special Edition, you also get to hear 'The Historical Notes,' an academic discussion looking back in time to the era in which the story takes place. During this lecture, the professor lays out a potential scenario during which people might allow a scenario, like the one in Handmaid's Tale, to take place. In this sense, it is not only a dystopian story, but a cautionary tale that begs us all to be ever vigilant to the threats against what we call Liberty.

Very LONG... and worth every minute
Revisado: 07-29-16
Both Books 1 and 2 seemed to go on forever, taking about a week each to finish (listening for 2 hours or so during my daily commutes). At some points, the drama associated with how much someone loves someone else can be long winded. However, the struggles and combat sequences are well spaced so that each mini-story is essential to the whole. Personally, this has become one of my favorite trilogies and with the right producer and director, could make for an awesome television series. Scott Brick does a great job reading, having the ability to make minute changes in inflection and tone that let you know when two different people are speaking. Well done.

GREAT READ! Worth the time.
Revisado: 02-28-15
I was a little apprehensive after reading the initial reviews. However, the story was captivating and I didn't stop until I'd finished it. The narrator's southern drawl actually made the setting more believable.
