L.A. Not So Confidential is a gem in the genre!
Revisado: 12-20-21
LA Not So Confidential is an amazing podcast and not just for true crime aficionados. They look at each event through the lens of an expert practitioner. I love the way they intelligently dissect each crime and explain the laws surrounding the issues. As someone who also supports police departments, I find this show refreshing. A must listen!

Historia
What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

The hunter becomes prey, as a heist goes sour and Parker finds himself trapped in a shuttered amusement park, besieged by a bevy of local mobsters. There are no exits from Fun Island. Outnumbered and outgunned, Parker can’t afford a single miscalculation. He’s low on bullets - but, as anyone who’s crossed his path knows, that definitely doesn’t mean he’s defenseless.

The Parker series never disappoints. I really like the premise of being in the small town amusement park. Fun setting.

Historia
Nineteen-year-old Tommy Carver desperately wants to make something of himself, but he's got some mighty tall odds stacked against him - a brutal sharecropper father, a secret love affair with his wealthy landowner's daughter, a step-mother devoid of maternal instincts, and even his own short-tempered, prideful ways. The odds only get worse when Tommy is fingered for murder in this shocking, twisting tale that explores sex, American Indian rituals, simmering race politics in mid-20th century Oklahoma and, of course, crime.

Historia
In his best-selling 23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism, Cambridge economist Ha-Joon Chang brilliantly debunked many of the predominant myths of neoclassical economics. Now, in an entertaining and accessible primer, he explains how the global economy actually works - in real-world terms. Writing with irreverent wit, a deep knowledge of history, and a disregard for conventional economic pieties, Chang offers insights that will never be found in the textbooks.

A great book on the current state of economics.
Revisado: 09-27-19
Ha-Joon's book is practical and easy to read. I am not an economics major but it is easy to understand the ideas. Well thougjtout and presented. I found a lot of meaty truths in this book, easy to sink your teeth into. Great read.

Historia
Every day, we make decisions on topics ranging from personal investments to schools for our children to the meals we eat to the causes we champion. Unfortunately, we often choose poorly. The reason, the authors explain, is that, being human, we are all susceptible to various biases that can lead us to blunder. Our mistakes can make us poor and unhealthy. We often make bad decisions about education, personal finance, health care, family, and the environment.

Great ideas about encouraging people.
Revisado: 09-09-19
Some of what is covered in this book is found elsewhere. But the main point I found intriguing. How do you nudge or encourage people to do the right thing? Studying the natural tendencies of people is worthwhile. When behavior is shocking, maybe it shouldn't be.

Historia
The US tax code is a total write-off. Overstuffed with loopholes and special interest provisions, it works for no one - except tax lawyers, accountants, and corporations, that is - certainly not me and you. Not for the first time, we have to tear it up and start over. That happened in 1922, and again in 1954, and again in 1986. There's a pattern here; we reach this point every 32 years. Which means the next complete re-write of the tax code is due in 2018. Can we write a new tax code that is fair and simple? In fact, we can.

Historia
Into Keldale's pastoral web of old houses and older secrets comes Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton. Along with the redoubtable Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, Lynley has been sent to solve a savage murder that has stunned the peaceful countryside. For fat, unlovely Roberta Teys has been found in her best dress, an ax in her lap, seated in the old stone barn beside her father's headless corpse. Her first and last words were "I did it. And I'm not sorry".

I'm very good start to the Lynley series.
Revisado: 08-26-19
I'd seen the episode on TV many years ago. So decided to go back and read the series. It's a very good start but I must say the story is a little dated. I'm sure in the late eighties it was more shocking than it is now. For fans of the series the 1st novel is a must read but it might not be the best. And that's not a bad thing since there's more to look forward to.

Historia
It should have been a lovely English country-house weekend. But the unfortunate guest list is enough to exasperate a saint, and the host, Sir Arthur Billington-Smith, is an abusive wretch hated by everyone – from his disinherited son to his wife's stoic would-be lover. When Sir Arthur is found stabbed to death, no one is particularly grieved and no one has an alibi. The unhappy guests find themselves under the scrutiny of Scotland Yard's cool-headed Inspector Harding, who has solved tough cases before.

A great book for the Agatha Christie fans who want to read something else. Old English manners. A lovely book though it does have some slow bits. I enjoyed my first dive into Georgette Heyer.

John Blake and Miranda Sugarman dated in high school, but after graduation they went their separate ways: he stayed in New York City and became a private investigator while she moved to the midwest and settled down to a safe, respectable life as an eye doctor. Or so he thought -- until the day, ten years later, when he opened the Daily News and saw Miranda's photo staring out at him under the headline "STRIPPER MURDERED."
