Historia
A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit.

A nice combination of sci fi and fantasy
Revisado: 10-28-24
I've read most of Sanderson's other books so when I had a road trip coming up I thought this would be the perfect fit since it's a one off adventure. Without any spoilers, the mystery is engaging. We have a main character who doesn't know who he is (in more than one sense). It's a journey of confidence, courage, and bravery.
Things I liked: The divide between technology and magic, the well fleshed out world, similar enough to feel familiar but foreign enough to capture my attention, such a fun journey for the main character, very fulfilling story.
Things I didn't like: The story took a bit to capture my attention and the villains were a little stereotypical. The humor was also a bit hit and miss for me, though I did laugh a few times. There are also these chapter breaks between some story chapters that after a while I ended up skipping. I thought they really bogged down the book.
Overall I loved the story and really enjoyed the journey of all the characters and what they learned. If you've ready Sanderson before, you know well what you're getting. This fits his style very well, especially as he continues to branch more and more into sci fi.

Fun Straightforward DnD Adventure Story
Revisado: 08-28-24
The Fallbacks definitely feels like it's trying to get in on the Baldur's Gate fervor without hitting readers over the head with references. Definitely a great entry point for anyone interested in Faerun as a setting. The story isn't overly complex. A small time adventuring party gets in over their head and has to stop evil from doing evil stuff.
The characters are little paint by numbers. The bard is a selfish performer, the wizard is a shy introvert, the dwarf cleric is gruff, and so on. It's very much a classic adventuring party and very much plays into the tropes of a DnD campaign. I think it captures the spirit well and feels like a nice almost cozy adventure.
The book is also pretty accessible to younger readers. There's mild swearing and some drinking but overall a very lighthearted fantasy novel. If you have a teen interested in DnD, this might be a good option. Overall I was pretty engaged throughout but the middle definitely dragged for me. I was worried I might not finish it but it picked up in the last quarter a really regained my attention. Overall I enjoyed The Fallbacks and would definitely go on adventure with them again.

Fun ending to the series
Revisado: 08-26-24
I'm in the minority of fans and enjoyed these second era Mistborn novels to be more entertaining that the first 3. I think the 4 novels that make up this era of Mistborn feel like a great adventure novel full of nice mysteries, fun (though not complex) characters, and just a great pace and tone the whole time.
This novel involves a lot more of the overarching Cosmere universe that surrounds Sanderson's novels and is the 4 in the series so it's safe to say it's probably one of the worst starting points. But even if you've just read this series, you end up missing a lot of the connections.
It was a great conclusion for the story, the characters, and the overall universe the book exists within. I enjoyed this series and I'm a bit sad to see we won't really see these characters again. I had really grown to enjoy their adventures.
This is probably a dumb comparison but the book reminds me of a warm cup of tea or watching Saturday morning cartoons as a kid, just the ability to get lost in something else and go on a comforting yet exciting adventure.

Edgy
Revisado: 02-05-24
I like many enjoyed the Lightbringer series that followed this series from Weeks and decided to dive into his back catalog to see if this compared or captured some of the literary magic I had grown fond of from his other series.
Things I liked: I enjoyed the characters a lot, fun dynamics and twists with their relationships. The overall story is something I liked, an urchin finding his agency and power, balancing that skill and power against the people and things he grows to care about. I love the trope of main character thrown into royal court society.
Things I didn't like: The magic in the book is vague and just sort of pops in when useful. There's also a ton of sexual violence against kids. I was not expecting this and made me question a few times if I was going to finish the book. The ending is meandering and doesn't feel as conclusive as I had hoped. I don't see myself continuing the series.

I greatly enjoyed the audio version of the novel. The story was excellent and the narration by Edoardo Ballerini was superb. I can’t wait for Silva’s next novel a year from now.

Entertaining stories mixed with cultural relevance
Revisado: 09-05-18
Fresh off the boat tells the interesting blending of immigrant mentalities mixing with 80s and 90s American culture. Huang's stories are funny and build an exciting narrative centered around finding out who he is in a world where he's an outlier, frequently using he avenue of food to help create a bond.

Light hearted and enthralling
Revisado: 06-10-18
I like to listen to books on my way to work and nightly walks. The story is interesting but not overly complex. The world building is clear and not convoluted. The action in the book is clear cut and not overly described. The narrator does a great job with character voices and tone.
If you like fantasy novels or play DnD, you'll definitely find something to enjoy in here. Perfect for younger readers or people who don't like overly bloody or violent stories.
