Historia
Deadeye Dick is Kurt Vonnegut's funny, chillingly satirical look at the death of innocence. Amid a true Vonnegutian host of horrors - a double murder, a fatal dose of radioactivity, a decapitation, an annihilation of a city by a neutron bomb - Rudy Waltz, aka Deadeye Dick, takes us along on a zany search for absolution and happiness. Here is a tale of crime and punishment that makes us rethink what we believe...and who we say we are.

Poignant exploration of Fascism, gun violence, and manhood

Writing in the 1980s, Vonnegut was somehow able to capture the feeling of middle America in the Trump era. Very much worth the read.

Great material, odd narrator
Revisado: 01-20-23
The contents of this audiobook are amazing and very helpful. And the narrator is mostly very good. But for some reason the narrator has chosen to change his voice whenever the authors quote someone, perhaps trying to build up a character as if he were narrating a novel. But for this genre it’s just weird.

One of my favorites
Revisado: 06-22-22
Ahsoka is one of the best characters in Star Wars, and this novel connects her story from Order 66 to the Rebellion against the Empire. Johnstown’s characterization of Ahsoka is spot on, and narration by Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka herself, is a perfect choice.

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Enthralling, prescient, moving
Revisado: 09-21-21
A beautiful, frightful story of a future that could take place at any moment, and indeed is taking place in various nations around the world at any given moment. This is necessary reading for the 21st century. My only regret is that I didn’t read it sooner.

Historia
Following the success of At Blackwater Pond, this second CD from best-selling poet Mary Oliver contains a selection of 37 previously published poems and four as yet uncollected, read by the poet in her steady, magnetic voice. Oliver recites from the full range of her poetry - from her classic nature writing, to her verses for her mischievous bichon Percy, to her ever-deepening spiritual poems. Many Miles will be a most welcome addition to the collections of her fans.

Quick paced but worth the listen
Revisado: 03-25-19
Mary Oliver reads her own words exquisitely, if a little rushed. Listening, it was at times difficult to tell where one poem ended and the next began. I also noticed a couple of typos in the chapter titles. But overall, an excellent listen.

Not exactly a feast
Revisado: 01-28-19
This is an interesting and entertaining look into the life and historical context of Mark Twain. The feast part is a bit odd, with weird foods and a chef who doesn’t seem to get the purpose of the project. He’ll substitute a hard to find ingredient with something more common, or he won’t pay attention to how the ingredients are sourced. If I were the chef, I’d insist on the same ingredients and go to the source myself to see how it’s produced. This chef knew how to cook, but didn’t seem to know or care about 19th century American food culture. The conceit of the feast seems interesting enough in the beginning, but then it branches to subjects completely unrelated to the food. The other thing that bugged me was the unnecessary use of the F word by the host. I’m usually not bothered by course language, but it just felt strange to find it in this. It made it seem less serious and trustworthy. The most valuable parts are the interviews with the scholars and experts who know about Twain and/or the foods and culture of his day. Nick Offerman is great in this as well. Except for the poor execution of the food concept and the random F bombs, this is a great exploration of Mark Twain.

Historia
A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Revisado: 05-13-18
Tom Sawyer is often seen as a lesser story to Huck Finn. But that’s because it’s being compared to Huck Finn. This is a fun, humorous, and (dare I say) meaningful story by Mark Twain. Nick Offerman was born to read this book.

Historia
What is art? Why do we value images of saints, kings, goddesses, battles, landscapes or cities from eras of history utterly remote from ourselves? This history of art shows how painters, sculptors and architects have expressed the belief systems of their age: religious, political and aesthetic. From the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece, to the revolutionary years of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the artist has acted as a mirror to the ideals and conflicts of the human mind.

This landmark production, perhaps the most ambitious radio project ever attempted, began when Star Wars creator George Lucas donated the story rights to an NPR affiliate. Writer Brian Daley adapted the film's highly visual script to the special demands and unique possibilities of radio, creating a more richly textured tale with greater emphasis on character development.

Masterful radio drama--as great as the film.
Revisado: 01-26-13
What made the experience of listening to Star Wars (Dramatized) the most enjoyable?
I listened to this dramatization over and over as a kid in the early 80s, playing out all the parts with my brother's action figures. I had seen the movie once or twice, but wasn't able to see it over and over till I was in my early teens. This was the version that I fell in love with. The acting, music, and sound effects make it possible to fill in all the details with your imagination. This is masterful radio storytelling. Even the intros and outros for each episode bring back strong memories.
