Historia
When ten-year-old Ebby Freeman heard the gunshot, time stopped. And when she saw her brother, Baz, lying on the floor surrounded by the shattered pieces of a centuries-old jar, life as Ebby knew it shattered as well. The crime was never solved—and because the Freemans were one of the only Black families in a particularly well-to-do enclave of New England—the case has had an enduring, voyeuristic pull for the public. The last thing the Freemans want is another media frenzy splashing their family across the papers, but when Ebby's high profile romance falls apart, that's exactly what they get.

Fell Flat…But, Worth the Read.
Revisado: 04-30-25
While I appreciate a good historical mixed with modern day read, this story fell flat. The historical part was excellent. The modern day part felt preachy and arrogant. I don’t need to be reminded of global warming, our nation’s tragedies, and the pandemic. Those things felt very tossed in the mix. The story of the Freeman family seemed too casual at times. They thought about the tragedy all the time, but never seemed to focus on getting justice. Unrealistic. I still recommend that people read this book. The Jar and its history is fascinating.

Historia
Transformative and breathtakingly honest, The American Queen is based on actual events that occurred between 1865 - 1889 and shares the unsung history of a Black woman who built a kingdom in Appalachia as a refuge for the courageous people who dared to dream of a different way of life. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love.

A Special Book
Revisado: 10-08-24
This book presents a special nugget of history that I never imagined. To know that The Happy Land was an actual place warms my heart, yet saddens my soul. A few months ago, I discovered that slaves remained in Boone, NC and had a community. This book provided more history wrapped around a heartwarming story. I will now tell everyone about this book and about their story. Our history is valuable.

Historia
Bobby and Cheryl Love were living in Brooklyn, happily married for decades, when the FBI and NYPD appeared at their door and demanded to know from Bobby, in front of his shocked wife and children: “What is your name? No, what’s your real name?” Bobby’s thirty-eight-year secret was out. As a Black child in the Jim Crow South, Bobby found himself in legal trouble before his 14th birthday. Sparked by the desperation he felt in the face of limited options and the pull of the streets, Bobby became a master thief.

Historia
He was born the mixed-race son of a negligent, drug-dealing pimp father and a struggling single mother. He was raised in the slums of Dayton, Ohio, suffered incredible abuse and racism, and had multiple stints in the juvenile justice system. He barely graduated high school and has no college degree. No one expected him to succeed. But succeed he did. Gripping, heartbreaking, enlightening, and ultimately uplifting, I Got There proves that no obstacle is too difficult to conquer - and that the game can be won by anyone, from anywhere.

Great Book
Revisado: 10-11-21
This book….this…book. I thought it was going to be an autobiographical account of how a kid from a not-so-great background made it. I had watch some interviews with J.T. McCormick on YouTube. So, I thought this was going to be a fill-in the blanks listen. No. It was a lesson. It was a lesson to learn from everything and everyone. Good and bad situations give valuable advice. It’s a lesson on having a driven attitude, not just go along for the ride. I hope he is writing a book for our young people as a guide to success, no matter what. I definitely learned my lesson.
