500 F words isn’t how you move beyond YA 🙄
Revisado: 09-16-22
I really loved her other books, they were so well written and enjoyable. This one feels like a jumbled mess with 1/4 of the words being swearwords. I’m actually fine with occasional swearwords when they fit but this book is ridiculous. It makes the Martian look like a Disney movie. There are so many in this book it feels like she tried to double its length with F bombs. It gets pretty grating, especially as an audiobook. I could never listen to this with anyone else in ear shot let alone children in the room.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Nothing happens! Tom clear your throat!
Revisado: 04-03-20
Although I can admit that this author has a beautiful ability with the English language, I have to say this is one of the most boring books I’ve ever listened to. Which was made much worse by the fact that Tom Hanks needed to clear his throat through most of the narration. His voice had that phlegm rattle that you hear when someone desperately needs to cough. It was a boring terrible experience listening to this book.

Beyond disturbing
Revisado: 08-22-19
This is like the snuff porn version of 50 shades of gray. Stay away! Seriously so disturbing, graphically horrific and disturbingly detailed torture/mutilation/rape scenes. Wish I hadn’t read any of it.

Meandering, boring and unenjoyable to follow

I make it about 2/3rds of the way through this book and finally gave up after realizing that I hadn’t enjoyed a single page. I really wanted to like it based on the reviews but it just want happening.

A delightful and moving tale of depth
Revisado: 07-16-18
The best book I’ve read in years! The rich story of Melissa’s family and travels are not only entertaining but eye opening. Her willingness to share the tender details of losing her son made weep and come to a greater understanding of loss and grief. I don’t think any other book has make me smile more or feel more. I would recommend this book to anymore.

Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet.… So begins the story in this exquisite debut novel about a Chinese American family living in a small town in 1970s Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother's bright blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue When Lydia's body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together tumbles into chaos.

Most depressing book of all time
Revisado: 04-13-16
Have you ever wondered about the intricacies of others misery? Have you wanted every detail of a families life that has zero ability to communicate anything whatsoever? You too can experience the painful bitterness that results from people's total inability to express anything at all. But don't worry because even though they can't express anything verbally you'll get to fully experience their inner most thoughts of failure, depression, regret, shame, worthlessness and cliché teenage angst in every character. The only good thing about this book is that it helps me know to never ever read a book recommended by someone who liked it. Some people only find value in literature that depresses them. As if anything happy, interesting, creative or good is somehow of a lesser literary value. Those people will love this book, it's their spirit animal. I'm literally angry that I waisted my time on this miserable slop.

Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.
