Historia
Artillery duels between the allied forces in South Korea and the seven thousand guns of North Korea ranged across the DMZ. With much of the North Korean aircraft destroyed during the preemptive attacks, South Korean and American attack fighters sortied from bases to strike at the leading North Korean columns. Skirmishes broke out between forward screening units. Nerves were on edge as the major ground units of the north and south were about to collide head-on. Will the southern defenses hold? Or will the masses of the north force their way through?

No real story
Revisado: 04-29-25
A good description of battlefield activities but there are no main characters and no plot. It is almost like a well-narrated RTS game.

Historia
There is only one way to reunite a country that has been split by two bloody civil wars in thirty years, one of them nuclear: savage their external enemies and leave them so weak they cannot interfere with the union until stability is achieved. The newly reconstituted China–now the Federated States of the New Middle Kingdom–has a strike plan that will leave both the Russians and Americans bleeding and desperate to survive.

Poor entry in an outstanding series
Revisado: 04-22-25
I love the author and the series but this entry felt phoned in. The plot was cobbled together and implausible, and the over-the-top parodies of liberal politicians—while probably cathartic for the author to write—felt strained and irrelevant to the plot, such as it was. The trope of seeing dead people who five advice and encouragement would have had more impact of not used on at least three separate occasions. All in all, it felt like the author wrote some prompts and let AI write the book.

Great story but awful narrator
Revisado: 10-15-24
An interesting story with lots of good twists and turns, despite an obvious overarching storyline. However, the narrator was truly wretched. He mispronounced place names and his voices for the villain and for women were astonishingly bad. One woman who was supposed to be sexy was given the voice of a 7 year old girl. Truly disturbing. Other women got one dimensional high pitch shrieks for voices. If I had the money I would pay to have him voice act my enemies.

The Merry Band of Pirates stopped the enemy from stealing a Sentinel, and destroyed its Elder starship, so why weren’t the Pirates planning a victory party? The enemy was not what they thought it was. It was much, much worse.

Great story but a little formulaic
Revisado: 10-09-24
This entry lacked a lot of the originality and humor of earlier entries, but by book 17, it’s not a surprise that the series has gotten a little formulaic. It was still a good story with an interesting cliffhanger. RC Bray was, as always, fantastic.

Historia
The Aftermath of a stunning victory—especially an unexpected, complete, and final victory—should be high-fives all around, listening to politicians give boring congratulatory speeches, and a well-deserved rest for the Merry Band of Pirates. Yes, the galaxy is still a freakin' mess, but that is nothing new, and for a change, that can be someone else's problem. Until, you know, something really bad happens, and only the Pirates can deal with the problem... Or not.

Historia
The oily and brackish waters of the Russian Northern Fleet submarine base part for the passage of the colossal special purpose Omega II-class submarine Belgorod, on a mission to hold the United States hostage. This gigantic submarine is armed with three Poseidon unmanned submersibles, each with a 10-megaton warhead. Her goal: placing them offshore in US ports in a nuclear-blackmail chess move.

The story is good and the action enjoyable. The women and the relationships are not realistic. But I doubt many people are reading this book for dialogue and character development.

Historia
In the war-ravaged borderlands of Ukraine, a Russian mercenary unit has gone rogue. Its members, conscripted from the worst prisons and mental asylums across Russia, are the most criminally violent, psychologically dangerous combatants to ever set foot upon the modern battlefield. With all attention focused on the frontlines, they have pushed deeper into the interior to wage a campaign of unspeakable barbarity. As they move from village to village, committing horrific war crimes, they meet little resistance as all able-bodied men are off fighting the war.

Really wanted to like it.
Revisado: 08-06-23
I like Brad Thor; I like the Scott Harvath series. And I am rooting for Ukraine against Russia (I check the news multiple times a day hoping for good news). So how could I dislike a book with all of these elements? Unfortunately, it was just half-baked. The reason for going to Ukraine seemed insufficient, the action was predictable, and there was just nothing original, and the characters were one dimensional. They had all of the ingredients, but it seems like Thor rushed this one to market to capitalize on the invasion without taking the time to put a proper story together. It was more like a series of interesting but disconnected vignettes. I hope the next in the series is better.

Great story with good character development
Revisado: 07-30-23
It is rare to find a story with good character development in a non-obvious plot arc. I wouldn’t say this book is as good as the best of Clancy, or even the best in the series. But it is better than most.

OK story. Series has lost steam
Revisado: 07-17-23
The writing wasn’t very creative, and the action, a bit too predictable in this installment. It is not nearly as good as earlier entries in the series. But if you like the series, the same characters return.
