Historia
Ever since he was small, John Robison had longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits—an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes (and stick his younger brother in them)—had earned him the label “social deviant.” No guidance came from his mother, who conversed with light fixtures, or his father, who spent evenings pickling himself in sherry. It was no wonder he gravitated to machines, which could, at least, be counted on.

Historia
In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.

Life-changing! (at least for me)
Revisado: 05-06-20
At last, a book that I feel – deep down in my gut and the depths of my soul – can help me out of my ruminative rut.
Ambivalence and over-thinking has hindered me for most of my adult-life. And I’ve known the cause for years: the fear of later thinking:
“I should have known! Dumb little me. Should’ve known better! Shame on me. I should have considered things more carefully – and should do so next time I have to make a decision.”
That leads to over-thinking. Analysis-paralysis. En masse. Again and again. In many of life’s aspects.
This book has the answers – the cognitive strategies to use!
And I love the narration. She’s fresh, positive, and to the point. I literally feel I’ve gotten a loving sister in my pocket at all times now. One that can tell me that I should’t beat myself up for past bad decisions – and not overthink future ones.
Thanks Annie!!!

Title does not reflect audience
Revisado: 05-02-20
The book's title and subtitle indicate this is a book written to help YOU "Learn, Lead, and Live Without Barriers" – but it's written specifically for educators teaching students.
If you're in that audience, the book may be inspirational. Just don't expect it to be instructional. It's a WHY book, not a HOW book.

Historia
In Mind in Motion, psychologist Barbara Tversky shows that spatial cognition isn't just a peripheral aspect of thought, but its very foundation, enabling us to draw meaning from our bodies and their actions in the world. Our actions in real space get turned into mental actions on thought, often spouting spontaneously from our bodies as gestures. Spatial thinking underlies creating and using maps, assembling furniture, devising football strategies, designing airports, understanding the flow of people, traffic, water, and ideas.

All over the place...
Revisado: 05-02-20
Interesting content, yet I agree with other reviewers that it's a tedious, tiresome listen. The narrator is fine, but the author writes in a style I've never liked:
3 sentences about the main topic. Then 2 sentences about something related. Then 4 sentences with an example re: the main topic. Then yet another example, but from a totally different arena.
The numbers above are not specific – just to illustrate how an author's writing in that style constantly confuses the brain of the listener. It's difficult to constantly have to reorient as to what the author is now talking about. If you skip forward 2 minutes, you'll be scratching your head as to why the heck the author is now talking about kids, when the example is about trees, and was talking about pizza 4 minutes ago.
All the examples and anecdotes feel like being the bounced-around ball in a pinball machine.

Paul Jarvis left the corporate world when he realized that working in a high-pressure, high profile world was not his idea of success. In Company of One, Jarvis explains how you can find the right pathway to do the same, including planning how to set up your shop, determining your desired revenues, dealing with unexpected crises, keeping your key clients happy, and of course, doing all of this on your own. Company of One is a refreshingly new approach centered on staying small and avoiding growth, for any size business.

Starts out strong...
Revisado: 05-02-20
Company of One starts strong – but weakens as it progresses. And when he went down the "team this, teams that" path, I knew this book's title was the misleading (and typical) result of a book publisher (or editor) who insists on either a more appealing, better-selling title – or, added content that caters to a broader audience (i.e. teams).
The actual subtitle (premise) of the book is "Why Staying Small Is the Next Big Thing for Business".
A better fitting subtitle for the actual book would have been: "Why Starting Small Is the Next Big Thing for Business".
The book isn't about staying small. It's about starting small. And there's a BIG difference.
In the beginning of the book (which is also the Audible preview), he mentions examples of being an author as a perfect example of a company of one. And that's why I purchased the book: to learn more about being successful as a SOLOpreneur – i.e. STAYING a "company of one".
With that said, the book is fair enough as a general business startup book. But so are many other books.
It's strange there are so few books that solely and extensively target SOLOpreneurship.

Meandering
Revisado: 01-23-20
"Meandering" is the primary word I think of, while listening to this audiobook.
It begins with a typical "why"-section: why use Song Maps – why follow this advice – here's how it has helped me immensely, and can help you too. Such a section is normal, for most self-help books. But it goes on and on and on. The author still makes his case 20 minutes in, and 30 minutes in, and so on.
Finally he/she gets to the meat of the content. Here, the problem is the opposite: the concepts, steps, and sub-steps are not elaborated sufficiently upon – making it a superficial and confusing listening-experience.
I then logged onto Audible.com to see whether an accompanying PDF had been supplied – possibly making the content more useful. But no. Audible writes this: "The audio references supplemental material that is not included with the purchase of this audiobook."
Bummer. Should have read the description more carefully before purchasing. Will ask for a refund of this book.
The narration isn't my cup of tea (pun intended) either. Although a matter of taste (pun equally intended), it's just a tad too aristocratic, for me to connect with it.
For a much better book a la this one, I recommend The Addiction Formula. It's amazing!

Historia
Present moment awareness is an essential ingredient in life if one expects to experience any degree of authentic peace and contentment. It has been acknowledged for centuries as the cornerstone of spiritual awakening in all traditions of Eastern thought. In the West, however, it is still a relatively unrecognized concept for living. The Western mind is always restless, never content with the moment.

Good, but incomplete
Revisado: 09-23-19
I bought this book quite a few years ago. Have listened to it a few times over the years.
Overall, I applaud its central message: to work mindfully – to experience more flow, and less stress.
However, in my own experence, it's incomplete. Flow isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Sure, it's nice. But too much flow = ADHD hyperfocus gone wrong. The loss of sense of time, not working towards a goal, but simply "being in the process" – can actually be quite harmful to one's life, if not properly managed.
Trust me. 'Cause I achieved so much flow and focus at some point that it severely hampered my relationships, and income. I simply lost my "sense of urgency" as Steven Covey would put it.
I like the book, but I think it's time we move towards self-help books that acknowledge the fact that life isn't as simple as we'd hope! Life is complex, and there are very few corners that can be cut. And what works for some people doesn't work for everyone.
Tailored solutions is the future. Believe me on that one.

What does it take to create the career you want? It's no secret that the world of work has changed, and we're shifting toward an ever more entrepreneurial, self-reliant, work-from-wherever-you-are economy. That can be a liberating force. But there's a major obstacle professionals face when they contemplate taking the leap: how to actually make money doing what they love. You may have incredible talent and novel ideas, but figuring out how to get started, building your reputation in a new realm, and bringing in a steady flow of new clients can be a daunting prospect.

Alternative title: Ways to Earn Money Online
Revisado: 02-12-18
A more precise title for this book would be "Ways to Earn Money Online". In it, Dorie lists the various ways you can make money online (affiliate programs, online courses, masterminds, podcasting, etc).
That's all helpful, but mostly to newbies who haven't yet dipped their toes in the online marketing pool. Had it been titled with my alternative title instead, it would perhaps sell less? Books on "ways to make money online" are everywhere.
I had hoped for more of a HOW to create multiple income streams, as in: practical advice, and a larger portion of "here's what I have learned over the years" wisdom.
There is *some* of that, but not enough to satisfy what I'd hoped to find.
Still, it's a solid book, taken for what it is.
What I did find valuable, is that Dorie Clark cites concrete numbers for how much various online marketers have made and spend on advertising, download numbers for various podcasters, how many episode-downloads advertisers expect before they're interested in sponsoring your show, etc, giving the book realistic, concrete perspectives.
I also appreciated her honest assessments of mistakes she'd done in the past, product creation and marketing wise. I could certainly relate to the case where a case study had pre-sold an online course, launched it, sold one membership, and due to his integrity felt obliged to create a weekly video for one member, month after month. That's the hard-earned wisdom I wish more authors would write about. There's already so much "do this, do that, and voila: you'll be rich" content available. All it does, it lead people into the false idea that their next online undertaking is a piece of cake and bound to be successful. Knowing the hardships you'll encounter beforehand, is what WILL increase your chances of success.
That's why elite police units like SWAT and and special operations forces like the Navy SEALs are so good at what they do:
- they train with the *expectation* that things will get REALLY tough (the sh*t will always hit the fan),
- that every mission will seem *almost* impossible to accomplish,
- that everything that *can* go wrong *will* go wrong – and that it's rarely the things you expect to go wrong. So train to be adaptable: don't choke when it happens – adapt, reorientate, reprioritize and act on the new scenario with as little interruption as possible.
Dorie Clark's book does go some distance towards that mindset – but could go a lot further.

Now that 75 percent of screen time is spent on connected devices, digital strategies have moved front and center of most marketing plans. But what if that's not enough? What if most people ignore company messages? What if consumer engagement never goes further than the "like" button? A sobering reality is hitting marketers. Technology hasn't just reshaped mass media, it's altering behavior as well. And getting through to customers will take some radical rethinking.

Revisado: 04-26-17
For some reason, I had a hard time "getting it" the first time I listened to it. I kept pressing the rewind button on my iPhone, to hear paragraphs again.
Not because the book is unclear, but perhaps because it's profound. At least as profound as a book about marketing can be:)
After having finished it, I looked forward to relistening.
I did so, a few weeks later.
And after that second relisten, which happened maybe two months ago now: I feel like relistening for the third time.
I guess it's a marketing mind-bender, to me, this book:)
The narration is good too. When I give five stars for narration, it's because the narrator adds something special to the experience. I think he does so in this instance. Good job.
