Historia
On the hottest day in living memory, Richard Mallory Tindall, the owner of a patent firm, does not return home to Cleete village. When a man is found crushed to death, Tindall's case goes from missing person to homicide. In the course of solving murder cases, Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan has seen all manner of ugly death. But there's something particularly gruesome about this one, the body crushed beneath the marble and iron of an old Saxon church tower. With rubble blocking off access to the crime scene, no one can get close enough to inspect the body.

Love—keep reading even when I don’t understand
Revisado: 12-11-20
These books are so good that I read them over and over, even when I know I’m missing parts of the mystery, solutions, or stories. This author is that good. And, eventually, I hear the word or sentence I missed the first (or third, or fourth lol) time and can then grasp the boom as a whole.
Derek Perkins is close enough to me that I don’t feel like the characters are all new, or being voiced incorrectly. At first I hadn’t even realized the narrator was different from the previous book!
Three more books in this series is my Christmas present from my son to me. :)

Historia
Life for Henrietta Jenkins was a quiet, well-ordered affair - a home with her widowed mother and degree studies at university. But her life changed dramatically when, just before her 21st birthday, her mother’s body was found in a quiet road, apparently the victim of a hit-and-run driver. For not only did the simple case turn into a murder hunt, but the post mortem also revealed that Grace Jenkins had never had any children. In which case, who was Henrietta?

A tricky one to follow, but still worth it!
Revisado: 11-19-20
I found this one a bit too twisty to follow the first time through. I had zero idea what was going on, and any ideas I did have I couldn’t support. This is not my favouriye of this series, but is definitely not one to skip.
Narrator still a tad under William Shatner to me, but still quite good. He doesn’t step in the author’s wit for sure, which counts for a lot for me!

Who would want to kill a nun? That was the problem facing Inspector C.D. Sloan of the Berebury CID when the body of Sister Anne was found at the foot of the cellar steps at the Convent of St Anselm. Sloan soon found that interviewing half a hundred black-habited sisters as potential suspects for murder was no easy task - especially when he realised that, to him, one nun looked very much like the next, and every sister had an assumed name - and a past...

Such dry, surprising wit. Great character development, great mysteries.
Narrator was a bit much at the start but grew on me as it went on. Kind of halfway between William Shatner and... well, someone else dramatic but not AS dramatic as Shatner. Lol

Historia
Sarah Garland, a retired homicide detective who's gone through a painful divorce, seems to have found her peace at last, as a coffeeshop owner in the sleepy (and freezing) small town of Snow Falls, Alaska. What she didn't expect was for her past life to catch up with her. Or for her new life as a mystery writer to inspire a deadly killer to target her.

Narrator horrendous
Revisado: 11-13-20
What were they thinking? This narrator couldn’t hold an accent for an entire dialogue by one single character; she was all over the place: her Jersey, then the south, the England, then beach Barbie.
I am not too sure about the writing because I was having to recreate each sentence in my mind as a normal person might have said it. But I do feel this book is not for me. The plot was soooo slow moving, and there were too many details. The tables were on the floor, the chairs were connected to the marble blah blah

Why is she like this? I read other reviews for book 1, AFTER I’d completed my own review for book 1, and I wasn’t sure I agreed that she was stupid. Now, at chapter like 3 or 4 of book 2, I wholeheartedly agree. What a ridiculous woman.
“Hi, I’m a smart person with a degree and responsible job but, because of emotional wounds, I’m making myself an accomplice after the fact to a serious crime, and putting my landlord’s property at risk. I am also blaming my boyfriend for helping me out for selfish reasons.” Geez
Narrator reads this character as whiny, and in the first book, I thought it was just the narrator. In this book I can see that it is the character who is whiny.
Quitting.

Her first major event is a program presented by a retired homicide detective, Al Buckley, who claims he knows who murdered Laura Foster, a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death 15 years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies.

On the fence
Revisado: 11-09-20
It took me a long time get into this, and I quit more than once. It felt like it took a long time to introduce a ton of aspects—characters, settings, different relationships; I suppose the author expects us to stay for the long haul, and wants to give us a solid setup. It was around chapter 32 (of 37) that I figured I’d look for book 2.
Jury is still way out on the narrator. She is far too bright for my personal tastes, but I also feel she is too bright for this main character. The male voices aren’t too bad—a little milky and weak.
I’ll try book 2 since it is free and I want to see if things pick up.

Happy ending, poor narration
Revisado: 11-04-20
I am sure I could appreciate the author’s writing more if I heard it with a different narrator, or read it myself. This narrator was not good. I almost quit right away but I was too lazy to pick a new story so I stuck with it. For the story itself, I am glad I did.
I have a feeling I’ve read some of this series before but I thought I had quit because it veered off into werewolf territory. Anyone know which series I might be talking about there? Lol

Stories worth it, I give up on audio though
Revisado: 10-29-20
Narrator did finally change from Mia Chiaromonte but, though Lucy Rainer is a better reader, her voices are painfully high, and her presentation of Daisy and Lucy—well, of everyone really, but particularly those two—are very off. Too exuberant, too openly emotional. Her calm demeanor and sensible approach are what makes Daisy Daisy. I give up. Am going to have to listen to the text-to-speech versions of the rest (except for book 14 which is oddly Bernadette Dunne again for just the one book). The first 3 books were so wonderfully done by Bernadette Dunne, so try those and then skip all audio versions after that. Otherwise you’ll lose your sense of Daisy’s character.

But the tensions between the Ambrose team's coxswain, Horace Bott - a shopkeeper's son and scholarship student at Oxford - and rower Basil DeLancey - the younger son of an earl and all-around bounder - are constantly threatening to erupt into violence.

Revisado: 10-27-20
Story fantastic. Of course :D
I am very very disappointed that this narrator (Mia Chiaromonte) has recorded books 6 and 7 as well as these past two. She is terrible. Completely misrepresents the characters. Has this one sounding haughty when she is not; that one sounding weak and unsure when she is not; that one sounding like a low-voiced woman when it is a strong male.... There are many passages when you cannot tell who is speaking, or when the speaker changes, because the voices are so similar. Any accents are inconsistent, even within the same sentence. The narration between the dialogue is too bright and high-pitched, putting emphasis there in stead of on the dialogue.
It is a tough go when you love the author and the series but begin to feel the book is less well-written due to the narration. ARG
