Historia
The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers—a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village—will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

Started a bit slow but WOW! Sucks you in and drives home the point. You get to know interesting people and you care what happens to them. Well written and well narrated. A bit of a downer but a terrific story.

All stories connected--as the characters also end up connected--to others in the book. Clever concept and well written. It held my interest.

Historia
No One Would Listen is the exclusive story of the Harry Markopolos-lead investigation into Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. While a lot has been written about Madoff's scam, few actually know how Markopolos and his team - affectionately called "the Fox Hounds" by Markopolos himself - uncovered what Madoff was doing years before this financial disaster reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, no one listened, until the damage of the world's largest financial fraud ever was irreversible.

Revisado: 04-08-10
Terrific inside look at Wall Street. Scary and enlightening at the same time. Anyone with investments should "read" this book!
Harry and the gang are true heroes. I hope there are more like them out there--many more, but fear there are not enough.
We had Frank Casey--who first brought Madoff to Harry's attention--speak at our college. He was terrific. Strongly recommended!

Zero stars if I could
Revisado: 08-04-09
If you like contrived plots and bad writing, you will like this book. I resented the credit I spent on it. I like almost all books, so do not think I am a harsh critic. Far from it. But there is just too much here to dislike. Very sophomoric and unsophisticated treatment of important subjects. Do not waste your credit.

A wonderful series--this one too!
Revisado: 12-04-08
I love this tongue in cheeks series from Alexander McCall Smith. The characters are wonderfully drawn and you want to meet all of them. Smith is always insightul, with a dry humor that is always entertaining but never mean-spirited. This book is warmly written with soft characters you will remember. I loved all of the Scotland Street books and just downloaded Smith's latest: "The World According to Bertie." I can't wait to listen.

Historia
Nestled among Seattle's skyscrapers, The Zephyr Holdings Building is a bleak rectangle topped by an orange-and-black logo that gives no hint of Zephyr's business. Lack of clarity, it turns out, is Zephyr's defining characteristic. The floors are numbered in reverse. No one has ever seen the CEO or glimpsed his office on the first (i.e., top) floor. Yet every day people clip on their ID tags, file into the building, sit at their desks, and hope that they're not about to be outsourced.

Wanted to like it, but could not
Revisado: 12-04-08
I liked Jennifer Government a lot, so I eagerly snapped up Company when I saw it. I was disappointed. It drags, the "joke" lasts about 10 minutes, not the over 9 hours of narration. Narrator was good--he is not the problem. I suppose we do not all find the same things funny but I was bored senseless by this offering--and I am not easily bored. Get Jennifer Government instead.

Save your credit
Revisado: 06-12-08
I wanted to like this book because I am a lover of classics. But it dragged on for four unrelenting hours before it became moderately interesting. The narrator was ok--he pronounced several words differently than anyone I have ever heard use those words, though. Crane is fond of having his characters repeat. Thus, "I shall not go." Then again, "I shall not go." It got tiresome pretty quickly.
I remember Crane as a heck of a poet. Stay away from this fiction title, though, unless you are a mascochist.

Historia
This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

Revisado: 03-19-08
This book is a marvel. You feel as though you are in Bombay with Lin, the lead character. Exciting adventures, wonderful characters. I made friends with the characters and since it ended, I miss them--I can't let go. I can, though, urge others to listen. You will love it. I will look forward to the author's next book. What a wonder this one is!

Historia
Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, and bodies float through the streets and hang from trees.

Fabulous
Revisado: 03-19-08
Burke is a wonderful writer--I bought everything on Audible by him after I finished Tin Roof. You can practically SMELL New Orleans as it must have been during Katrina. This book helps you understand why people could not leave and gives a sympathetic picture of what post Katrina was like. All of that backdrop woven into a very good suspense story. A wonderful achievement.
