Historia
This reissue of Thomas Sowell’s classic study of decision making, which includes a preface by the author, updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Anointed. Sowell, one of America’s most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency but our very freedom.

Fantastic way to go to sleep
Revisado: 11-10-21
Robertson Dean's voice is incredibly soothing, but The Power Broker is much too interesting to fall asleep to. This book really hits the sweet spot. I listen to it almost every night.
Not that Sowell is not insightful or a forceful arguer - it's really an excellent book when read at normal speed. But the methodical, dry tone of his prose, when slowed down to ~0.75, becomes hypnotic.

Historia
Robert Caro's monumental book makes public what few outsiders knew: that Robert Moses was the single most powerful man of his time in the City and in the State of New York. And in telling the Moses story, Caro both opens up to an unprecedented degree the way in which politics really happens—the way things really get done in America's City Halls and Statehouses—and brings to light a bonanza of vital information about such national figures as Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt (and the genesis of their blood feud), about Fiorello La Guardia, John V. Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller.

A compelling tragedy
Revisado: 06-26-20
Wonderful elocution by the narrator.
Worth reading the text while listening.
The narration omits some footnotes.
The rise and fall of Robert Moses makes for a deeply interesting tale. Though this book is sometimes said to have been the final straw in breaking his reputation, the author's portrayal is in truth remarkably even-handed; Caro does not allow RM's tragic flaws to wholly overshadow his heroic attributes.
Angels are bright still, though the brightest fell.

Historia
The 200th anniversary of the birth of Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809 - 1892), one of the most popular of poets, is celebrated in 2009. Works such as The Charge of the Light Brigade, Crossing the Bar and Tears, Idle Tears have made him an internationally famous figure, and the second most quoted writer of all time (after Shakespeare).

Beautiful rendering of Ulysses
Revisado: 06-19-18
Pennington does a wonderful job with Tennyson's verse. His voice has a gruffness and gravitas to it that is particularly well suited to the more elegiac pieces.
High point: Ulysses, running from ~19m41s to to ~24m57s.
Sadly absent: Crossing The Bar, which I would have loved to hear in Pennington's voice.
