Very good thriller . . .
Revisado: 09-19-05
I particularly like this genre and am often disappointed with the audio versions -- especially the narrators. But this one is an unexpected pleasure! The narrator is exceptional, capturing everyone very well from the autistic Darcy to the female protagonist to the serial killer himself. There are some "twists" and turns -- even though it is possible to guess some of it...
The only thing I must do is warn you of particularly heinous violence. This one does step "out" a little further than most on that limb...
If you like the genre, you'll probably love this...

Pi Patel has been raised in a zoo in India. When his father decides to move the family to Canada and sell the animals to American zoos, everyone boards a Japanese cargo ship. The ship sinks, and 16-year-old Pi finds himself alone on a lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra with a broken leg, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon it's just Pi, the tiger, and the vast Pacific Ocean - for 227 days. Pi's fear, knowledge, and cunning keep him alive until they reach the coast of Mexico, where the tiger disappears into the jungle.

Another excellent story!!
Revisado: 08-08-05
I have to admit...after the first ten minutes, I almost quit. But, a friend of mine who had read the book said -- "you have to get past the first 40-50 pages...it's really slow and not very interesting" so...I kept listening.
Thank goodness I did because I would have missed the story of all stories! The story kept me glued to my iPod -- I didn't want to stop listening at all!
The reader was excellent...I wouldn't have thought so at the beginning, but he fit the content of the book very well and brought a sense of "bringing it to life" to me...
And, that very slow, draggy "beginning" was necessary. At the end, you understand why you needed all the boring "background" that seems to be similar to the crust you might slice off a piece of bread -- not much flavor, seemingly unnoticeable.

Very mediocre for Patterson
Revisado: 08-08-05
This was just "okay"...If you like Patterson, you'll probably like this. I loved his books in the beginning...now they're starting to become a bit too predictable. There was an annoying aspect to the "read" version of this book, however. At the beginning of every chapter (and there are a LOT of chapters), a distorted voice would come on and say "chapter ____" with other sound effects as well. By the middle of the book, it was driving me crazy...very silly and unnecessary...

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

One of the BEST stories I've ever
Revisado: 08-08-05
Everything -- from the story to the reader to the characters themselves -- is wonderful about this book. It isn't a typical plot...It isn't something you've "heard" before. It is unique...remarkable...and I couldn't stop listening to it. If you are an intelligent person who likes a real story, then this will delight you. If you like trivial, repackaged fluff -- then stay away! This story does provoke thought...so...if you don't like stories that make you think -- run for the hills! I have recommended this to everyone! I put it among the top ten books I've "read" in the past 20 years...
