With all the raving reviews, I expected more. More character development, more world building, more overall depth. It was an okay story. I liked some of the quirkiness, like with Millicent and Gus, but I felt like it was a lot of build up, for a very anticlimactic end to each book and the series. I didn’t feel the tension or feel like it was much more than surface level entertainment. And sometimes that’s okay, but I was looking for more.

It’s a great story, even better than the first two books. The performance and the writing are equally engaging.

There are so many times I don’t finish a story because it just doesn’t keep my interest. This series was good from beginning to end. It had great pacing. Fantastic pacing. There was good character development and the romance was sigh worthy. I really loved the characters and though there wasn’t anything hugely unique about the storyline, it was done very well. I liked the Catherine/Lochlann Treaty Series, but this one was more. The romance was more as were the characters and plot. Olivia King is an amazing narrator and the only thing I wish it has more of was Logan’s brogue. Totally worth the credit or the cash.

I saw this book on Booktok which is always hit and miss. I loved it. I love the journey of hope and humanity. And the romance was great, just the right amount of steam and emotion. The performance was also topnotch. I’m happy I discovered this one.

So good. I read and listen to a LOT of books. Mariana’s pacing and character development are among the best. This is an unforgettable story that will stay with me.

I don’t always finish everything and I did finish this one so it must have kept me relatively entertained till the end. But as I got closer and closer to the end, I started to realize that there was some real depth missing. For one thing, the book starts off with Elle’s powers manifesting at a young age, and then she hardly ever uses her powers in her adulthood. Like hardly ever. Like even at crucial moments. I just kept waiting for her to kickass, and I’m still waiting. I am wondering, is this really a standalone? Because I still feel like the climax, the revelation, the character truly coming into her own…. never really happened. I also love the tortured hero trope, but Elle and Raiden’s relationship did not do it for me. Again, it lacked conviction and substance. And literally the same back and forth happened for like 2-3 hours between the two characters at the end. “He loves me; he loves me not”. It got repetitive and slightly cringeworthy. The sex scenes, while I actually prefer a little graphic language, seemed out of place in this book and felt meh. I do think the concept was good; the supporting characters were good, and overall the narration was pretty decent. So it’s okay. Entertaining, but I’d you are looking for something that really digs its claws into you, this may not be it.

I was entertained throughout the story. The performers are amazing. The book has some graphic sexual scenes and opens with a violent scene, but I do think the scenes for the most part are just a part of the story to make it more realistic. This is not YA fantasy in terms of content. Honestly, I am glad for it. I liked the politics and cultural aspects of the story which I hope they build upon. The story line though, at its core, is fairly basic. Four men and four women must marry and build alliances to stop an evil force. I am hoping it gets a little more complex than that and the characters develop even more in the coming books. I feel like it is leading there and I am excited to continue on in the series.

This story was dramatic and passionate. It was hopeful and haunting. It will last a long time in my mind.
