Historia
Thanks to the invidious reputation of his most famous work, The Prince, Niccolo` Machiavelli exerts a unique hold over the popular imagination. But was Machiavelli as sinister as he is often thought to be? In Machiavelli: His Life and Times, Alexander Lee reveals the man behind the myth, following him from cradle to grave, from his father's penury and the abuse he suffered at a teacher's hands, to his marriage and his many affairs (with both men and women), to his political triumphs and, ultimately, his fall from grace and exile.

Subtitle should be "His times and times."
Revisado: 03-12-23
This book reads at times like the minutes of a committee meeting, at other times like State Department archives, at still others like the rulebook to Risk. Mixed in with this tedium is salacious gossip that adds nothing to our understanding of the subject. Machiavelli's thought and writing is almost ignored at the expense of his political career, which is a bit like writing a biography of Paul McCartney that focuses almost entirely on his time with Wings, or maybe a bio of Michael Jordan that dwells on his baseball career. Skip this and go with "Machiavelli" by Miles Unger.

Her singular obsession is finding the mythical Book of Brin, a tome not just lost but intentionally buried. Respected and beloved by the Teshlor Knights, not even their legendary skills can protect her for what she finds is more dangerous than what she sought.

No words would do this book justice. It must be read to be believed, and no one can read it but Tim Gerard Reynolds. Prepare to laugh, cry, hope and despair, but most of all prepare to love.

Historia
This global history as the Chinese would write it gives brilliant and unconventional insights for understanding China's role in the world, especially the drive to "Make China Great Again." In this colorful, informative story filled with fascinating characters, epic battles, influential thinkers, and decisive moments, we come to understand how the Chinese view their own history and how its narrative is distinctly different from that of Western civilization.

FALSE ADVERTISING, highly misleading
Revisado: 07-18-21
Almost the exact opposite of what it claims to be. This is not history through Chinese eyes, or even an examination of historical memory in China. It is merely a history of China's dealings with foreigners -- "foreign policy" would be too generous. -- told more from an outside than a Chinese perspective. SKIP IT!!!

Historia
From bloodthirsty conquest to exotic romance, stereotypes of Spain abound. This new volume by distinguished historian Stanley G. Payne draws on his half-century of experience to offer a balanced, broadly chronological survey of Spanish history from the Visigoths to the present. Who were the first “Spaniards”? Is Spain a fully Western country? Was Spanish liberalism a failure? Examining Spain's unique role in the larger history of Western Europe, Payne reinterprets key aspects of the country's history.

This is like going to a great party but getting cornered by the only boring person in attendance. After a couple hours I just walked away and assumed he'd keep talking to himself. If there were such a thing as an "author's license," he should have his revoked for life. AVOID THIS BOOK!!!!!!

Historia
John Julius Norwich - called a "true master of narrative history" by Simon Sebag Montefiore - returns with the book he has spent his distinguished career wanting to write, A History of France, a portrait of the past two centuries of the country he loves best. Beginning with Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul in the first century BC, this study of French history comprises a cast of legendary characters - Charlemagne, Louis XIV, Napoleon, Joan of Arc, and Marie Antionette, to name a few - as Norwich chronicles France's often violent, always fascinating history.

Historia
First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurer, a man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

A Virtuoso Performance
Revisado: 10-01-18
Not all "celebrities" are able to handle classic literature, but veteran cinema journeyman Bruce Greenwood gives perhaps the best audiobook reading of any American actor I've ever heard -- and I've heard more books than anyone has a right to. "Islands in the Stream" is a flawed classic by the consummate novelist. It's vintage Hemingway, but occasionally becomes TOO Hemingway, if that makes sense. Too clipped, too spare, too laden with arm-tiring exertion, leaf-strewn nature writing and ocean-weathered compound adjectives. But don't let that deter you; Greenwood's performance is not to be missed!
