Age of sail (with sound effects)
Revisado: 02-18-25
The author borrows heavily from the phraseology of Hornblower, Aubrey, and Kydd for those who love the age of sail. Although the characters don’t have the same depth ( no pun intended) this is an enjoyable enough tale. Listeners should be aware that the production is overlaid with sound effects so that the author’s prose and the reader’s narration must compete with clopping horse’s hooves, screeching gulls, and creaking hinges throughout the story. If no sounds seem appropriate, strains of music or unnecessary sounds such as a ticking clock are used. When a character has an unspoken thought, an echo-chamber effect is applied to the narrator’s voice. Whether this enhances or detracts from the production is a matter of opinion, but it’s certainly not for everyone.

Historia
Following the popularity of the memoirs of Harry Flashman, the Victorian scoundrel who got himself embroiled in many events of his age, this book introduces a new generation of the family: Thomas Flashman, whose career covers the Napoleonic and Georgian era. This first book covers his adventures with Thomas Cochrane, one of the most extraordinary naval commanders of all time. From the brothels and gambling dens of London, through political intrigues and espionage, the action moves to the Mediterranean and the real life character of Thomas Cochrane.

History (almost) with a comic flair
Revisado: 07-10-18
The hero alternately romps and staggers through a series of loosely historical events, surrounded by characters from the British government and Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The book is not always humorous, as the scenes describing Algerian prisons and torture methods bring a shudder. The women in the story are there only to titllate; Thomas Flashmen lives in a world of brothels full of beautiful women who are happy in their work, and their caring, doting employers. Other than the few pointless brothel scenes, it is good storytelling.

Dickens read the way it should be!
Revisado: 06-16-15
My favorite Dickens novel (also the author's) I have read at least twice. The narrator was excellent to the point that the novel was brought to life. The narration was close to flawless and I would recommend this version to anyone who wants to enjoy a truly great novel read professionally.

Well narrated for young listeners
Revisado: 08-15-12
The five books in this classic coming-of-age series were written to be read aloud, and the narrator does a good job with them. They were favorite bedtime stories for our children and they enjoyed hearing them again while traveling. Although the main character is a boy growing to be a man, both my sons and daughter have read and re-read these stories. Be aware that some of the characters die in the later books, so this is not for very young children. Ages eight to twelve would be about right.

Classic Novel Well Narrated
Revisado: 07-30-12
This is a classic novel, but because it is long and prosy, it is not a natural for an audio book. The characters' sometimes lengthy speeches can sound like sermons. Nevertheless, it is well read, and the narrator uses changes in pitch and inflections to make the character's voices easy to distinguish. It remains a novel that every person must read to be considered well-read.

Great story, well read but audio could be better
Revisado: 05-03-12
What did you like best about King Solomon's Mines? What did you like least?
Good classic adventure tale, well read and certainly at a reasonable price. The audio quality is a little muffled, like an old AM radio.
