Big Little Lies~Great This~Excruciating

By chapter seven I was going to throw in the towel. I’d have thrown the book but it’s on Audible and I didn’t have a towel handy.
I waited patiently (forever!) to meet the characters thinking “Okay, it’ll all make sense then”. It didn’t.
When I finally (yes finally!) got to chapter 33 and it turned out the health resort the 9 guests have gone to are being given small doses of LSD I just about screamed!! I’ve waited HOURS to figure out where this is going and the best Liane Moriarty can come up with is to drug her characters to make them interesting? She should have thrown in the towel or thrown her manuscript!
I still have NO idea where this story is going. I can’t go on. This has been painful journey to nowhere.

Interesting premise...

Interesting premise turned into a tangled up mess. The number of characters was unwieldy and the author had trouble weaving their stories together. It wasn’t until the end of the first half of the book that I felt like I knew each person in the plot. Even then it was difficult to follow. I think the author knew she hadn’t woven her story into a satisfying conclusion. She used the prologue to do that. The prologue names the important (underline important) characters and what they went on to do. I was disappointed because the premise was so good.

Disappointing…This could have been a great story.

The author takes up way to much time setting up the story of the lost daughter and the fallout within the family. When the new man comes into her life and his ex-girlfriend begins speaking from the dead it gets confusing. As far as the ending It’s as if the author realizes she needs to wrap up the story and quick. She even adds a post script and yet there are so many unanswered questions. The most important being the math tutor...how did she skip through the cracks? When you fall asleep listening to a tale that should grab you and not let go you know it’s a marginal tale.

I usually enjoy Lux Raduo productions…

I was very interested in listening to the first production made in Hollywood. Every time I listened to this production I fell asleep. Clark Gable does a good job but Melene Dietrich sounds thoroughly bored. I never did actually reach the end of the story. I gave up.

Chapter 13 and I give up…

The multiple story lines should make this a compelling novel but…
I am far from a prude however the periodic rather explicit sex just distracts from the real stories being told. I find it unnecessary and distracting. As to the performance…It’s over the top.

A mystery that doesn’t grab you and not let go…

Given the reviews I was looking forward to this book. I really enjoy a story that goes back and forth in time. This book did. The present day part of the story is not very captivating. The past is. The ending is exactly what you would expect. This could have been great. It needed more meat in the present day storyline and in the performance of the same.

A wonderful bit of history …

Here’s your opportunity to listen to a good old fashioned radio show. Just imagine, as you listen, the whole family gathered around the radio. Then a piece of furniture. Yes, furniture stores sold them then. This was something families looked forward to. Before black and white TV and before houses were big enough for families to spread out. This is back in the day where families gathered together. I’m happy to say my children were purposely raised in a home with one TV we had to watch together. How lucky we were!
