Historia
When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Yet despite Ludlow's tranquility, there's an undercurrent of danger that lingers...like the graveyard in the woods near the Creeds' home, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets.

A depressingly good novel from the King
Revisado: 04-21-25
Man this on sucked to read…and I mean that in the best way possible. This book is bleak, sad, depressing, and unforgiving. It is all those things and it is also very very good. King takes his time putting you into the process of loss, tragedy, and death with the characters then puts the pedal to the metal and is zooming at 100 mph in the last 1/3 of the book! A few moments of the book had me wondering where the horror was or when it was supposed to happen. Then it hit me that the entire story from start to finish is the horror and the sense of dread I had while reading was exactly what King wants the reader to feel. There is a reason King is known for his descriptive and vivid writing and this is the poster child for that thought. Michael C Hall does well in his narration and actively tries to bring the reader into the narrative world. Of course if you love King you have to read this. But if you prefer cautionary fables, realistic stories about grief and the griefing process, or just really like sad books this one is for you.

Historia
Lay provost Eldon Fochs is a happily married father of four. Based on his disturbing dreams, he may also be a sex criminal. His therapist isn’t sure, and his church is determined to protect its reputation. Written from the perspectives of Fochs, his analyst Dr. Alexander Feshtig, and the letters exchanged between Feshtig and his superiors in the church, Father of Lies is Brian Evenson’s fable of power, paranoia, and the dangers of blind obedience. It offers a terrifying vision of how far institutions will go to protect themselves from the innocents who may be their victims.

This is horror because it is almost all too real
Revisado: 03-12-25
What a short but powerful book this is. It is also very disturbing and unsettling. The subject matter is something that occurs all too often in today’s society. This book is not for the faint of heart. Brian Evenson does a great job of setting up a nihilistic scenario and follows through by creating tension, anger, and a sense of despair. At some points the characters seem a little off and one note, I wish the writing would have been more descriptive at times, and it is very short so there is not much of an actual page to page narrative. But this book succeeds in creating a concoction of visceral emotions, disturbing imagery, and provides an example of unadulterated power and how it corrupts absolutely. The narration was ok overall, wish there was some more inflection and passion in the pivotal parts of the book. Overall this book is great and is a very good examination of how powerful a religion can be and how evil desires obedience is more than loyalty.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

A tome worth the time, King is timeless
Revisado: 03-06-25
Stephen King is the man. He can make me care about so much in such a little amount of time. In the case of this book all he had was time (it is a book about time travel and it is also a long book, get it?). Regardless he filled this book with an amazing narrative that keeps you coming back for more. There are parts of the book where I do think King does his best to fill time but comes up a little short and some of the interactions and scenes do seem unnecessary. But these are also the things that make King who he is, and even with my pathetic critiques this book stands on its own. From the characters, to the thrills, to the suspense, to the ending, everything has its place. While this isn’t my favorite King book, it is certainly up there with the best and will be one I will personally never forget. Also, the narration of this book is perfectly done and I will actively look for things read by the narrator now. Of course this is highly recommended from me for any King fan, any fan of time travel, and anyone who just enjoys a good story.

A brutal story of time, death, fate, and choice.
Revisado: 01-13-25
This book is very good and deserves all of the accolades it has received. It is a relatively short book but packs a punch when it comes to theme and delivery. This is a no brakes “it just happens” kind of book and reflects reality better than most books do. There were a few things I would like to see done better, but in the end I can’t complain about a good read. If you have seen the movie then you have read the book (mostly) so read this first then watch the movie! Also narration was well done and I appreciate the attempts at the vocalization of different characters. I do recommend this book to those who like reading cold and calculating books that provoke a sense of existential dread.

Actually scary vampires and a good narrative
Revisado: 12-05-24
Vampire stories don’t normally do it for me, but this one is by far my favorite. King, being the master that he is, makes these evil beings actually scary and menacing. He mixes fear and sensuality so perfectly which gives the vampires actual depth. King’s character work is perfect here as we get to know the residents of the town. These descriptions did get a little wordy at times and some did not lead to much in the story at other times, but overall I got to know the town and therefore viewed it as not only a character but a victim. The right amount of scares, gore, and dialogue are present King uses them all to perfection. The narration was well done and I enjoyed the listen. If you are a King fan, of course you should read this classic. If you are looking for a great scare or a top tier vampire book, this one is also highly recommended.

Historia
Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge.

A decent anthology with some good stories
Revisado: 10-28-24
This collection of dark fiction was good overall and each story has it’s own unique style and expression. The performances from the narrators was also good and allowed for the imagination to flow with the story. Almost all the stories were at least ok, a few were rough in my opinion and a few were also great in my opinion. I would recommend this to someone who really enjoys dark fiction and those looking to better understand indigenous literature.

A great haunted love story
Revisado: 10-03-24
King does it once again with a tale of love and horror. This novel tries to do a lot at once and is successful for most of it. There are some things that don’t hit and seem to be there for plot alone. There are also some problematic themes that are remnants of a time passed. However, these can be overlooked by Kings ability to suck you into a story, make you care about his characters, and provide a healthy amount of suspense and tension. Narration was done by King himself, and in my opinion he is a great narrator, I truly enjoy listening to him read. Highly recommended for any and all King fans and for anyone who is looking for a touching and scary read.

It was like watching a horror movie in my head
Revisado: 09-05-24
From the first page of this book you are hooked. You are then taken on a whirlwind of ups and downs and copious amounts of scares. My favorite aspect of this novel is how easy it was to imagine the narrative in my mind/imagination. If this isn’t adapted into a movie within the next 5 years I would be very surprised. Told from the perspective of a child the author does a great job of putting us in their perspective and living this horror through their eyes. At 3/4’s horror and 1/4 family drama this novel is a roller coaster of constant dread and anxiety. This is not a perfect book by any means. It does struggle at times to stay focused and is repetitive, some of the characters are actively unlikable, some of the character decision making is questionable, and there are obvious “bridging/exposition” chapters that are tempting to skip to get to the action. However as a whole this novel is well done and worth the time. The narration performance was great and I enjoyed the changes between characters. Highly recommended for any horror movie lover who is looking to get into horror literature as an easy transition and to anyone who just enjoys being scared.

King takes one of his favorite characters and makes her one of our favorite characters
Revisado: 08-22-24
Holly is about…well Holly. But it is way more than that and in this book we get to dive into her world a little more. This novel has all of the things that make King great and then some. This is by no means a perfect book and there are parts I wish were better. But this book was very good and I once again recommend Holly to any and all King fans and to any reader who enjoys detective procedurals that teeter on the edge of outright horror. The performance of narration was also well done and I would be happy to listen to them read again.

A great collection worthy of a King
Revisado: 07-30-24
Joe Hill is a master storyteller and it is clear from his collection that he has his own voice and knows how to use it. His story’s range from white knuckle suspense, intriguing mystery, terrifying horror, to hopelessly existential. He makes his characters realistic in such a short time that it is hard not to get attached sometimes. You feel what they feel and you want to know what happens next. From other reviews I see a lot of complaining about political discourse. I personally do not see any issues with any of his writing and encourage people to have open minds anyway. This should not prevent you from reading this anthology. The performances were also spectacular and well done. I highly recommend this book.
