Historia
In the distant future, corporations have become sustainable communities with their own militaries, and corporate goals have essentially replaced political ideology. On a youthful, rebellious impulse, Lawrence joined the military of a corporation that he now recognizes to be ruthless and exploitative. His only hope for escape is to earn enough money to buy his place in a better corporation.

Utter waste, use it as background noise to sleep to.
Revisado: 07-16-23
I’m not exactly sure what factors went into completing this disastrous book the way it became. But I can make some guesses.
It’s like the author was trying to describe a TV show he saw on his head. But he forgot that other people weren’t seeing the images.
He often fails to describe scenes or surroundings accurately, enough for me to visualize the story. He uses a trick from movies, called a “smash cut” but without the visual side, it utterly fails. Making it feel he spliced one story inside of another.
Quite a bit of the time he just uses “he /she, and it” to describe the characters he’s talking about, like he’s describing the story to a good friend. But then he’ll do the smash cut thing and jump to a different location/part of the story line, and then continue to use the words “he /she” but now, in reference to an entirely different character, without accurately describe what’s going on.
Very often the only description reference of a character is their first name. That’s fine, but later on in the story, (or when interacting with a certain character) he’ll reference that same character by only their last name, and change the way he references them in thoughts as well as in speech, as well as the way, he references that character to the audience.
Quite a bit of it is narrative from “inside” a characters head, trying to explain his complicated plot line from the thoughts of characters who are trying to explain it to themselves a.k.a. the audience.
Ignoring the bad narration. This book seems to employ every bad writer trick that could be imagine. I get that he’s trying to make this sort of a “mystery of the universe” that the audience hast to sort of “figure out”. But instead of writing an engaging mystery story, he uses tricks to “confuse the audience” and call it a mystery. Most the time I had no clue what was going on. I kept thinking I had missed a chapter, nope.
Like: jumping around the universe in describing 14 main characters to start the book out with. A very imaginative but rambling collection of out of context short stories. the author obviously has deep understanding about his complicated plot line, and is trying to do that “thing“ of multiple storylines converging. But fails… and fails to get across his intent, or imagination onto the page.
and This disjointed storytelling that he tries to make even more complicated, by not explaining a lot of things, including: acronyms, relationships, or surroundings.
I did complete this book, mostly out of habit, and the morbid fascination to see if he could actually accomplish what he was trying to do and make it a coherent story.

A tired story that seem to be forced.
Revisado: 06-16-23
Unfortunately, I got the impression from this book that the author fell into a whole bunch of bad writer traps.
For ex: Continually trying to “tell” us. How badass her marine is, rather than show us.
Or Introducing characters just to achieve one simple plot point, and then killing them off.
Or Single color emotions, she’s afraid of one thing the hole book. maybe she’s afraid of other things, but she intentionally ignores them, I don’t know maybe the writer is trying to prevent confusing the audience with her complex backstabbing story.
also a lot of the action is thrown in as an afterthought. Like these Marines are scooting around the neighborhood, finding things to keep themselves occupied….. until the next backstabbing plot comes revealed.

The war with Gaelis has gone poorly for Alex’s foes and well for his allies. He’s enriched himself, empowered his county with that coin, and built his county ever higher. Alex would rather settle down in his county and live a quiet and enjoyable life. One filled with familial things and friends. Where he could make his county the pride of the empire in peace. Because he’d already gotten to the top once before.

Wonderfully done amazing book
Revisado: 11-07-19
This is a shining example of how it should be done.
Very often I discover with OTHER authors, of these types of books, (lit RPG’s with adult themes) that they have: no finesse, no dignity, and are one step above a 12-year-old writing down their wet dreams.
Other poorly written books in the genre Usually include: hero fights won for no reason other than they are awesome, without a struggle, hero talents they: should not have, or should not be born with, so it is never a challenge. reactions and outcomes that would never happen in real life, and of course A 12-year-old’s wet dream, and main reason: women falling for the Poor excuse of a hero for no reason.
This book series is different. An absolute pleasure to read, lots of grounded real life struggles. That don’t always work out as planned. A flawed character that struggles to be somewhere between good and bad. And “affairs of the heart” that are a little bit too “lifelike” to ignore.
One of my new favorite authors, I look forward to reading all his books.

Good attempt, poor follow-through
Revisado: 09-17-19
I initially very much like this book, it was crafty, well written, a new look on an old idea. But I have a firm rule about not buying books that are... short... smaller than 10 hours long. (When I like and enjoy books, I want there to be enough book that I don’t finish it quickly. )
This one just barely made it by my 10 hour limit. But it helped that it had several follow up books. Unfortunately! With all the repeated sentences.... Power up paragraphs... listed dozens of times... and long stats sheets listed at the end of every (93) chapters. I fast forwarded through most of the book. Although it was an interesting storyline the length was extremely annoying.
i’m going to abandon the rest of the series, as it’s not worthwhile if I’m paying for half a book.

Historia
The Empire is splitting at the seams. The Great Houses refuse to obey the Throne World and have begun to conduct increasingly independent politics. Sensing the weakness of the central government, even the most loyal star systems of the Imperial Core are refusing to take orders from above. Is this just a string of coincidences, or a coordinated campaign? Can a disjointed humanity rally around a strong leader to deflect an alien invasion? Who of the many figures in intergalactic politics can rise to this challenge?

Devastatingly exciting
Revisado: 12-06-17
Absolute adventure, devastatingly exciting.
I’m not exactly sure why this book continues to get four stars. I would give it six. Plot lines were tight and concise, The motivations and actions of characters were well rounded, not excessive, and believable.
There was a reason for everything. Brilliant backstabbings, turn of events, and swings of loyalty. With good character storyline logic to back up every action.
There is also a variety of actions, to keep every type of reader engaged. Political motivations, space battles, Family, love, Lust, manipulation, and of course conquering the Galaxy!
two minor points that I dislike.
1) although it did not distract from the story, he paid very little attention to real world limits, and as such anything the main character tried had an extremely high chance of working instantly. Never having a downturn of luck. Even if real world situations would suggest it.
2) The ending felt very rushed, and almost like an evil genius sitting there monologueing to the audience so they will understand plot points he is board of revealing Slowly.

Good but feel slightly like filler or in-between book
Revisado: 08-18-16
I thought this is a good book definitely had a strong plot line, beginning/middle/end. But it seemed extremely simple, very linear. Telling the story from all points of view made the story extremely guessable. And once you set the plotline in motion you were simply waiting for the inevitable ending to occur.
Felt sort of like a filler, like there's an epic story that comes after this but you got to get through this section fight for independence first.

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Extremely well crafted story, but....
Revisado: 01-13-15
Such an extremely will craft a story, with so much detailed description coming at you very quickly that I often had to listen to it twice.
My one complaint is that it seems that the author lives so deep inside his own story that he forgets his is explaining it to an audience that is not familiar with the subject. Very detailed, but Very often I was confused about what person, location, or star The Author was talking about until halfway through the chapter. Because there is so many storylines that are often not interlinking I had to make an educated guess about which fragment He was talking about Until a recognizable character was mentioned by name, or specific trait.
