Sedaris has become smug

I got pretty tired of this book about half way through.

Now that he’s achieved all the markers of upper middle class, success, multiple homes, a husband, global travel, shopping in Tokyo for pointless outfits, he seems to have really acquiesced to a very small minded way of understanding the human experience. It’s pretty sad to me considering , I used to love this guy.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I could never ride as good as this man writes. But I really do wonder what’s it all about Alfie? Your family has clearly got some serious dysfunction unless you all just wanna blame Tiffany for being crazy. And the way that you handled her suicide was just frankly pretty off-putting.

Maybe sacrifice another owl to your empty inside and see if you can figure out where your heart is?

Or maybe jet off to Tokyo to buy some wacky outfits. If it sounds like I’m jealous, yes, part of me is. That part of me is unhealthy, which I guess I can credit this book for recognizing and myself. I think this is a pretty disappointing end to my interest in David Sedaris.

A gripping and inventive tale

A disappointment

Ending a book in a cliffhanger--not cool. This book is quite interesting in general but I was also struck by how quickly the man of faith abandoned it for a lady.

Wonderful! Disability studies in action!

this was a wonderful book. I love the wisdom of making the hero disabled. I learned so much about my own abilities but also lack of abilities.

Very tough going at times, but so possible to imagine in 2021. What happens with feckless elites bent only on sucking value from people and the earth are alloqed to do so with no thought for the future. Eerily prescient

this is the meaty and substantial Val mcdermid and a real pleasure to listen to. Thanks for the great work. Sometimes her endings fall flat and while I liked the way this one ended, I wished there would have been a confrontation between the main villain and Karen.
