The satisfaction this book bestows, born of all the seeds Abercrombie has planted throughout his First Law series, can be summed up in a word; fruition. At times heartbreaking, at others fist pumping fuel. The Wisdom of Crowds offered some big reveals that i really enjoyed. Some darlings returning, others departing. Consistently Abercrombie. Consistently brilliant.

World of Warcraft meets Sons of Anarchy is a completely apt description for this book. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, by all means, skip it. - But if you've got a whiff of chocolate coupling with peanut butter, then I strongly recommend you give it a taste. The window dressing is of a rollicking grimdark fantasy novel featuring a band of Half-Orcs patroling on their giant warhogs like a gang of badass bikers, but take a step inside and you'll find hidden depths. Just as Sons of Anarchy ambushes viewers with the complexity of Hamlet, The Grey Bastards will surprise you with its endearing characters, great story and a lush fantasy world. Rampant swiving, crude jokes and splatterhouse battles abound for sure, but also a damn fine fantasy novel. I'm fully in love with these characters now, and i'm totally on board for their future adventures!

More adventures of Ethan Kaille read by Jonathan Davis. I'm eating them up! Ethan faces his most powerful enemy yet in this tale. He'll need to team up with some friends, and even a well known enemy, for one climactic sorcerous brawl. It's all hands on deck! Throughly enjoyed this melee featuring all of the Thieftaker Chronicles' most formidable characters.

Feels like it was written by someone who despises the entire fantasy genre. There is no joy here. Only snark that isn't half as clever as it thinks it is. The political viewpoint here is not subtle, and seems to clash constantly with fantasy tropes, rather than creating something new and exciting. The main character is primarily defined by what he dislikes rather than actually doing interesting things. He suffers this world, we are meant to suffer with him in a humorous eye rolling way. But i think both the writer and reader would be better served by something that springs from a positive creative place, rather than reveling in tearing things down. It's not funny. It's just a bummer.

An Excellent Expanse Novella

Wow. As a passionate fan of the series, this Expanse novella didn't disappoint. Unlike THE CHURN or GODS of RISK (also recommended for fans of the series), STRANGE DOGS does not fill in backstory for one of the 'all stars' in cast of the Expanse. But it does something that I found very exciting; it takes you to Laconia.

The name of that planet ought to set off alarm bells for anyone familiar with the latter books of the Expanse. Especially as the release of book 7, Persepolis Rising, is right around the corner, I was grateful for this sneak peak at the 'home base' of what has been established as a major hub for the series' new shadow antagonist -Admiral Winston Duarte. Who makes a brief but poignant appearance in Strange Dogs, establishing him as a thoughtfully dimensional 'villain'.

Overall, Strange Dogs is not military in tone though. The story is told from the perspective of a young girl who has never known a home other than Laconia. Imagine following a day in the life of Basia's daughter, from Cibola Burn (book 4), and you start to get the picture. Like Ilus, Laconia is teeming with alien life. And the mysterious machinations of the protomolecule abound. Cara, through whom we experience Laconia, is innocent. And that innocence leads to a truly remarkable confrontation with the extant life forms of Laconia. The awe and terror evoked by that communion with the unknown is quintessential Expanse magic.

If there is anything to complain about here, it's that the novella's arc is somewhat predictable. But sometimes knowing roughly where a strange journey is going to land makes that descent to a final destination all the more intense. Do not expect big answers to the biggest questions asked by The Expanse, but rather anticipate more questions that ought to raise the hair on your neck. I feel more primed than ever for book 7!
