Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Vulgar
Revisado: 02-15-25
Vulgar characters and language. Perhaps there are people who talk and behave like this but I do not enjoy reading about them. No it is not that I live in a sheltered environment, it is that this kind of behavior bombards us every day, I read to escape the filth we live in not to bathe in more of it. I tried the book because it came with good reviews, as page turner, engaged immediately, surprising turns. Sorry it was fairly predictable, I had to take breaks from it by reading the news. Only good thing was that it did not cost me a credit. Not for the discerning reader!

Some of the stormy weather of the past few seasons seems to have finally lifted for the Quinns. After a year apart and an ill-fated affair with the Winter Street Inn's old Santa Claus, Mitzi has returned to rule the roost; Patrick is about to be released from prison; Kevin has a successful new business and is finally ready to tie the knot with Isabelle; and, best of all, there's hopeful news about Bart, who has been captured by enemy forces in Afghanistan.

Repetitive
Revisado: 01-09-25
I know that people like to read about the very rich and what they do, however is it necessary to list songs foods shops and clothes designers over and over and over and over and over, well you get my point. This appears to be a pattern in the Nantucket stories but this Inn series about the Quinn family is over the top. I do not often write a review, only when I truly love the book or author or reader, or if I find it annoying. This series qualifies as annoying.

Love love love this book. Love the format the characters the way they talk and write and behave. Love the readers. Listen to it at least once a year just to hear them. Love how they feel about books, that is how I feel also. They are old friends I love to return to and like them they do not disappoint.

Historia
Did you know that there are more penises than women in the Bayeux Tapestry? That the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 was started and propelled by women who were protesting a tax on women? Or that Charles Darwin believed not just that women were naturally inferior to men, but that they’d evolve to become ever more inferior? These are just a few of the startling findings you will learn from listening to Philippa Gregory’s Normal Women. In this ambitious book, she tells the story of England over 900 years, for the very first time placing women—some fifty per cent of the population—center stage.

Completely entrancing
Revisado: 05-14-24
I always knew that women in most societies were oppressed but I had no idea of the lengths English men went to in order to keep women as objects for their use and abuse. It was a revelation that they actually invented a mythology for their superiority and the abasement of women. So much for the myth of the British gentlemen.
I highly recommend this book. It is not a novel, it is not fiction, It is an endless list of men's efforts to keep women from learning, creating and even feeling. It is also a listing of women who did all of that despite everything. All women should read this, until we all realize that we are not the weaker, lesser vessel, we will never reach true equality. It should be read by men as well so they can better understand why women are angry. It will take generations for men to understand that life with women who are equal partners in life, in endeavor and feeling and passion is worth the price.
The research for this book is staggering and worthy of respect and attention.

Revisado: 03-21-24
Read one and you have read them all. It is very nice that the French worked so hard to protect "Their" art treasures, however many of their art treasures were stolen from other countries, for example, the Mona Lisa, stolen from Italy. I do not see them hurrying to give it back. To read about France during WWII one would think that with the exception of a few rotten apples everyone was in the resistance.
