Historia
Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie’s life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle—from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she’s trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.

exactly what I wanted!
Revisado: 08-08-18
This is a perrrfect chick-lit story and I highly recommended it. I just finished a super depressing book and needed something girly, flippant, and upbeat with an easy plot and solid denouement. This is a story that could easily be turned into a delightful made-for-tv movie :)

Brings these women to life
Revisado: 03-03-18
Overall, I'm glad I read it. There was several times throughout the book that it seemed a little too modern, like the author didn't research the time period thoroughly, but the actual story was brilliantly researched. I've read many books about/during WWII, but I've never heard it from a Nazi's POV, especially a woman Nazi. Nor have I read it from the POV of a non-Jewish person in a camp. It gave me a new perspective on the war, widening my scope of knowledge, and I really appreciate that.

Historia
Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly.

amazing, touching story that managed to keep me on the edge of my seat in suspense. the narrator is phenomenal, too. her ability to create a scene by her time of voice and/or inflection is astounding and makes Eleanor come alive.

For younger audiences
Revisado: 08-16-17
This was a good enough read that I stayed with it. The author definitely stretched the (acknowledged) truth about Mary Rowlandson, as there's not a lot of evidence that she preferred Native American life to English, but that made her very likable. I found the love interest a bit too obvious and forced, but I think I'd have bought it more if I were a tween.

Historia
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful but slowly going under - maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is actually fantastic
Revisado: 06-05-17
The narration was surprisingly fantastic, Maggie perfected Esther's sightly girlish, bored thoughts and made the text much more alive.
There's so much to the book, I restarted it just a few days after I finished so that I could speak more of it in.

Poor choice in narrator
Revisado: 03-23-17
It's definitely obvious that this is one of Moriarty's earlier books, but still good. it's just not as grabbing as her more recent novels. She captures people well, tho, just like the Moriarty I know and love. The narrator sounded depressed and her accent didn't seem Australian, much more British, which for some reason really irked me. Her depressive voice was seriously a killer.

Historia
All women want to kill their husbands some of the time. "Where there's a will, I intend to be in it", wives half-joke to each other. Marriage, it would appear, is a fun-packed frivolous hobby, only occasionally resulting in death. But when Jazz Jardine is arrested for her husband's murder, the joke falls flat. Life should begin at 40, but not with life imprisonment for killing your spouse.
