Historia
It’s mid-September 1893 and Eloisa Carstairs is the reigning debutant of Gilded Age Chicago society. To outsiders she appears to have it all. But Eloisa is living with a dark secret. Several months ago, she endured a horrible assault at the hands of Douglass Sloane, heir to one of Chicago’s wealthiest families. Fearing the loss of her reputation, Eloisa confided in only one friend. That is, until she meets Detective Sean Ryan at a high-society ball.

Maybe I should’ve looked at the title details more closely, but I was halfway through before realizing that this is some ham-handed Christian propaganda. This was under “historical fiction” and as a World’s Fair buff and Chicago Irish Catholic, I was excited to dive into this. This should’ve been advertised more explicitly as Christian literature, as I have no patience for sneaky indoctrination.
Besides that, it’s very clumsily written with phrases like “his good looks as handsome as ever.“ By the end of the first chapter, you knew exactly how this was going to end.

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Like someone screaming in your face for 10hrs.

I’m a fan of Ware, but this one is a big no for me. This was one of the most anxiety inducing books I’ve read in a long while, and not in a fun way. The whole thing is the protagonist’s inner monologue of how tired and wretched she is. Every decision she makes is wrong, but we have to hear the process of how she arrived there. For every decision. Her outer dialogue with others is cringe-inducing and is certainly not how a professional would behave. The setting is like some weird Escher situation, and as someone who has cruised several times, I can safely say this is not how ships work! Give this one a pass.
