First cry in years. So moving.
Revisado: 05-08-24
Legends of the Fall is simply the best modern novella. Jim Harrison weaves a tale in which you can grow. Reflecting on the characters relationship to your own life. At times I’ve been all the main characters. I’ve grown up with this story. Watched family members come and go and listened/read several times. Each time ending in tears, needed tears. Joy and sorrow so intricately woven. Life is a beautiful ride punctuated by the gravest heart aches.

Historia
Long before the advent of conventional farming methods - which have focused on constant growth, human intervention, and genetic homogeneity - the apple had already grown to become the ubiquitous all-American symbol it is today. Known for their hardiness, ability to adapt to new environments, natural diversity, and plentiful bounty, wildly grown apples were once known as “America’s fruit” throughout the trading world.

A decent every level story
Revisado: 10-22-23
A good intro to the , ecology, etc. But, to any moderately educated audience — lacking depth. I must also say that there are many Eurocentric - academic assumptions made about the Amazon and the people of the Amazon.

Cider today runs the gamut from sweet to dry, smooth to funky, made from apples and sometimes joined by other fruits - and even hopped like beer. In American Cider, aficionados Dan Pucci and Craig Cavallo give a new wave of consumers the tools to taste, talk about, and choose their ciders, along with stories of the many local heroes saving apple culture and producing new varieties.

A book full of body and nuance. Not unlike a fine cider.
Revisado: 01-16-23
I appreciated both the overview of European and American cider history. The book really shines in its regional portraits of cider and the natural and cultural histories that shape Variations throughout the landscape of the United States. I found the stories of individual orchards and cideries to be inspiring.

Revisado: 02-23-22
Rarely do you discover a book that is observational, historical, prophetic, and hopeful. These stories of treeline around the globe, of the places and the people are just that. The epilogue left me writing and sharing quotes and I continue to ponder the lessons on my daily forest walks. I am changed by this book.

Historia
In Dumb Luck and the Kindness of Strangers, Gierach looks back to the long-ago day when he bought his first resident fishing license in Colorado, where the fishing season never ends, and just knew he was in the right place. And he succinctly sums up part of the appeal of his sport when he writes that it is "[A]n acquired taste that reintroduces the chaos of uncertainty back into our well-regulated lives".

Familiar places and familiar characters of any fisherman’s experience
Revisado: 07-21-20
Gierach and Colacci make an impeccable team. Colacci’s performance for near perfect with the literary voice of Gierach. I imagine if I ever meet John I’ll be surprised by the way he sounds. Gierach excels at making you feel like one of the guys or gals sharing a campfire exchanging stories. Sure, they are all about fly fishing but they are also about place, people, relationships, landscape, philosophy, and living right. I appreciated the midwestern locations in this book. I recognized many of the “fish dogs” - think my lab thought the story was about her. I’m always sorry when his books are finished. I miss the conversations while I do the chores around the farm. My Dad would have been John’s age. I’m quickly approaching 50 and it gets harder and harder to find sage advice. Gierach, stay safe and keep writing!

Historia
In No Shortage of Good Days John Gierach takes listeners from the Smokies in Tennessee to his home waters in Colorado, from the Canadian Maritimes to Mexico - saltwater or fresh, it's all fishing and all irresistible. As always he writes perceptively about a wide range of subjects: the charm of familiar waters, the etiquette of working with new fishing guides, night fishing when the trout and the mosquitoes are both biting, and fishing snobbery, a pitfall he seems to have largely avoided.

I fish, but rarely fly fish.. love Gierach’s work
Revisado: 04-24-20
Discovered John Gierach just over a month ago. Nothing better than hearing stories of his fishing adventures all over North America while refinishing the wood and canvas canoe during pandemic lockdown. Think I’ve been through 4 already. Hide in the shop. Warm coffee or cold beer depending on the time and it’s like I’ve got a buddy next to me sharing fishing stories in the most relatable way I can imagine.

Historia
Five generations of Marnie O. Mamminga's family have been rejuvenated by times together in Wisconsin's Northwoods. In a series of evocative remembrances, Mamminga takes us to Wake Robin, the cabin her grandparents built in 1929 on Big Spider Lake near Hayward, on land adjacent to Moody's Camp. Along the way, she preserves the spirit and cultural heritage of a vanishing era, conveying the heart of a place and the community that once gathered there.

Revisado: 04-19-20
I grew up spending summers on lake Kipawa in Quebec at a summer cottage very similar to Marnie’s. Woody reminds me of my grandmother. The lodge operators remind of the Scharf camp. The guides, the friends, the family. Relationships forged in the Northwoods that shaped us and bound us together. Thank you for sharing!

I cried at the end
Revisado: 03-30-20
I’m nearing 50. Spent the afternoon in the barn hiding from the kids and wife hunkered down during the Covid-19 pandemic. Vanished canoe paddles and listened to this fantastic story remembering my grandfather, my father, my foolish wonderful outdoor exploits. I cried at the end. A toast to all of you uncles, fathers, grandfathers and my grandmother for giving a life long love of fishing! Yes, this book brought it all to life. Thank you Gary Paulsen.
