Would you recommend The History of the English Language, 2nd Edition to your friends? Why or why not?

How could the performance have been better?

The instructor speaks as if he is putting hard emphasis in each sentence. 36 hours of emphasis is a lot to listen to. It would have been better if he modulated his tone.

Did The History of the English Language, 2nd Edition inspire you to do anything?

No.

Any additional comments?

I purchased the course because I was interested in how the English language developed into what it is today. The lectures did bring out a few interesting points - the fact that England was a tri-lingual country for hundreds of years was interesting. Also other odd points here and there. But this was 36 lectures, about a half hour each. It would have been more merciful to at least compress it into a fourth (or less) with more stuff and less boring fluff.

My wife and I went to Costa Rica last year and so I listened to all three of the Penton Spanish series. I had three years of high-school French (many years ago), and that was enough to help me follow the Spanish. After going through the program several times, I felt confident enough to go off on my own. Admittedly my Spanish was minimal, but enough to negotiate purchases, ask simple directions, etc. All was with difficulty (happily the Costa Ricans seem to be a patient people), but having started from no Spanish at all, I was pleased.

The Penton programs I have listened to don't offer any helpful explanations of the language in the audio, but they do have some helpful notes in the booklets you can order. So they are best used by those who have a background in a similar language, or perhaps have had some training in the language and are looking to brush up their skills for a trip.

Not even well organized

This is a very poor learning program. The Penton programs don't explain the language. They simply provide words and phrases in English and the foreign language together. If you know the fundamentals, that can still be helpful. But this program is even badly organized. For example, you would think it would put numbers in sequence, days of the week and months in series and different phrases that show how the language works. It does not of that. It's basically a random series of English words followed by their Korean translation.
