Walking on water. Multiplying the fish and the loaves. Raising Lazarus from the dead. The miracles of Jesus may be well known, but they are often treated as nothing more than fanciful tales. Written as a companion volume to The Storytelling God: Seeing the Glory of Jesus in His Parables, this book by Jared Wilson argues for the historicity and importance of the miraculous events surrounding Jesus’s life and ministry.

Harsh & Judgmental
Revisado: 01-22-24
The author refers to everyone as morons and idiots, redefines sin as not being overcome by the glory of God, insults popular preachers and those who are taken for in by them, and even insults the disciples of Jesus. The author sounds like a very angry, condemning person, but couches everything in Biblical language. Theologically, he’s on point, but his aggressive communication style leaves much to be desired.

Historia
For a generation adjusting painfully to the demands of a modern industrial and commercial society, Asia came to represent an alternative vision of the good life: aesthetically austere, socially aristocratic and imbued with spirituality. The Book of Tea was originally written in English and sought to address the inchoate yearnings of disaffected Westerners. In a flash of inspiration, Okakura saw that the formal tea party as practiced in New England was a distant cousin of the Japanese tea ceremony, and that East and West had thus 'met in the tea-cup'.

As much a masterpiece as the art to which it is dedicated
Revisado: 05-16-20
The Book of Tea is a tribute to tea, but far more than that. It is a poetic masterpiece itself, covering a variety of topics that he relates to tea-making: architecture, art, literature, poetry, government, religion, culture, and philosophy.
The narrator does an exquisite job. His pacing, pauses, and enunciation are perfect. His Japanese accent provides a much more authentic sound considering the fact that the author is often critical of Western culture and values. To be fair, though, the author is also occasionally critical of Eastern ideals and of humanity in general.
All in all, both the book and the diction and delivery of the narrator are golden works of art.

Beauty, truth, wisdom
Revisado: 01-14-19
C.S. Lewis once said, “If you are a Christian you do not have to believe that all the other religions are simply wrong all through. If you are an atheist you do have to believe that the main point in all the religions of the whole world is simply one huge mistake. If you are a Christian, you are free to think that all these religions, even the queerest ones, contain at least some hint of the truth.” The Tao Te Ching contains more than just a hint of truth. It is an invaluable work of simplicity, truth, beauty, and wisdom that I have enjoyed reading again and again. However, I am new to Stephen Mitchell’s translation and narration. I am not a Chinese linguist, so I cannot comment on the accuracy of this translation, but I can say that it is clear, concise, and poetic. Mr. Mitchell’s narration is perfectly annunciated and perfectly paced to permit each line to penetrate the soul. Thank you, Mr. Mitchell. This is a gift to the world.

The best book in the world
Revisado: 08-24-17
There's no better literary work than Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Written in the midget of the Civil Rights Movement, it's a beautiful tale that warms your heart and stirs your soul.
Told through the eyes of a child, living in the US South during the 1930s, seeking to understand the world, the story conveys deep truths about justice and injustice, prejudice and fairness, misunderstanding and insight, cowardice and integrity.
I've read this book over and over, and every time I do, I find something new to appreciate. The audiobook is narrated by Sissy Spacek, who is perfect for reading this novel.

Historia
The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive alteration as a society and an eventual end.

One of the best nonfiction books I've encountered
Revisado: 08-22-17
As an American, it has been difficult to fully understand what Europe has been going through these last several years. This book really put things into perspective for me.
This is one of the most informative and startling books I've read in a very long time. The author presents the facts of the situation facing Europe in light of what has been occurring in the Near East. He explains the challenges that the people and governments have been faced with as well as the challenges faced by immigrant populations. The author paints a grim picture of what may await native Europeans and immigrants to Europe in the future, but he balances that by offering a list of viable solutions that could be used to create a path forward.

Historia
Speaking from the cultural viewpoint of the Lakota of the northern Plains, the author discusses the evolution of native cultures to fit within the environment and adapt to it, as opposed to changing it drastically or wholesale to fit human needs and comforts. He suggests that changing our contemporary thinking in relating to the earth in a less harmful way does not mean a drastic change in lifestyles....

Wisdom from the past for 21st century living
Revisado: 05-29-16
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book to listen to. The wisdom shared is timeless and invaluable. I believe there is a great deal of truth here. If I correctly understand what Joseph Marshall has said, then my only disagreement is the way he has interpreted Christian teachings. I believe that Christianity is sometimes misinterpreted to permit abuse and misuse of the earth. I believe that the Bible instead teaches that we are just as much a part of natural creation as everything else and were commanded by God to care for it. Rather than being at odds with his Native American philosophy and worldview, I believe that these beliefs are shared by the Biblical authors and provides a common ground for understanding and for living. The Bible tells us that the first human was made from the earth and will return to the earth.
