Standard male wish fulfillment
Revisado: 02-05-25
A middle-aged mans dream of being 18. All the tropes. Wiser than everyone else his age. Much smarter and more insightful than your average 30-year-old. Quickly climbing the ladder of success. Everyone becomes buddies. Many people praising the 18-year-old and saying things like why didn’t I think of that. No major struggles. No major snafus. Fairly upbeat and an easy choice when you can’t pay full attention to a book.

Not the best in the series
Revisado: 09-09-24
Usually enjoy Hoon but this book was hard to believe, had a thin plot, and Hoon was out of character and cruel vs funny a few times. Enjoyed seeing the usual characters and the fun American additions. Would be great to have Elvis continue in the series! Interesting Hoon language as usual - this author is great with humor. The narrator was generally ok with US accents but had trouble when an American character pronounced the words anything and everything. Instead of the American hard ‘inny-thing’ the narrator consistently said the soft ‘in-a-thin.’ And instead of the American ‘every-thing’ the narrator consistently said ‘ever-thin.’ Sadly, those words were said often enough (wrongly) that it kept kicking me out of the listening experience. But the Scottish accents rocked as usual. Overall the interesting characters in this book (loved Elvis) almost made up for the awful plot. But not quite.

Irritating male fantasy
Revisado: 05-14-24
Interesting story sadly ruined with one dimensional stereotyped characters and political judgments. poor people are obviously lazy or bad or stupid. Women without husbands to guide them are silly and make bad judgments until they learn the error of their ways. Men who are not preppers or weren’t raised in the country don’t have anything to contribute. People on food stamps are just too lazy to grow gardens etc… Every time a character spout ed one of these ridiculous stereotypes it would throw me out of the story. It’s a shame the author didn’t have a good editor. It kind of reads like a middle-aged white men’s fantasy apocalypse in which all his opinions are validated, women apologize for not respecting him, and everyone ends up singing his praises. Left me irritated.

Too long teenage gothic
Revisado: 03-18-24
Interesting beginning with a mysterious hook, but then chapter after chapter of angst and relationship ridiculousness more suited to high school. Any mystery was buried. First, I sped the voice to 1.7 and then I just started skipping chapters wholesale to get to any kind of action. The ending was good. Had perhaps 15 chapters of angst been edited out this could’ve been a good book.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

No. Just no
Revisado: 03-05-24
Pages of boredom with occasional tidbits of interest. As if a middle-aged man wrote a teenagers male fantasy of adukthood. Rooftop beer convos with your buds and the cute nudist neighbor who doesn’t mind if you look at her. Lots of casual misogyny with lectures as conversations and a few PC statements thrown in. Stereotypical goody-goody, bad boss, father figure etc.. Very little actual plot. I stuck with it till the end trusting the reviews and I really wish I hadn’t. When the excitement finally came, it played out in a ridiculous way. A group of adults leaving shelter and riding unprotected bicycles across the desert in an alternate universe full of giant man eating dragon squid to find their building manager? Yeah. And there’s more. Semi interesting premise had it been written by a more skilled writer who had an editor who cut 2/3 of it.

Sorry I bothered
Revisado: 04-01-22
So sorry I continued with this book. Interesting start but midway through I got tired of the incredibly evil and omnipotent villain. It was constant torture and misery with small glimpses of hope ruined by the amazing and godlike skills of the villain. I stuck it out because I wanted to see what happened to the main characters - only to discover a cliffhanger. I really dislike authors who don’t have the skill to end a book and end on a cliffhanger. Or when they use a ploy to get people to buy the next book. Regardless, it breaks all my trust in an author. I wish I had not even started this book. I definitely won’t read the next one.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

Strangely cute
Revisado: 02-08-22
Plot was engaging and strangely cute. A different take on the post apocalyptic tale with an interesting and unusual main character. No zombies. No main characters tortured and killed or even kidnapped. Kind of a prepper’s dream of heaven. They are bad guys and problems, but the main characters are cautious and prepared. I liked seeing how they tackled each problem successfully. It was comforting to see the good guys prevail. I also liked that this book was not as preachy as some of the other books of this ilk. Yes, hard work has its rewards but people in white collar professions are useful too. My one problem was the author stating an antidepressant was addictive and using that as a plot point. It’s misleading and potentially harmful for readers to believe this. Antidepressants are no more addictive than heart medicines or other life saving medicines that need to be tapered off slowly. It would have also been nice to state that the now med-less character received counseling from the nurse rather than the nurse saying she would have to learn to cope. Depression is a medical condition and requires treatment and monitoring. It is not a weakness of will or simply a lack of strength to cope. The nurse would have known that and would have provided treatment. Other than this - enjoyable book with a lot of information!

Historia
New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

I almost quit reading this book. While the concept was interesting it seemed to drag after the first few chapters. But it became markedly better midway through the book The action was so good that I did not want to stop listening. Very glad I didn’t give up before the author hit his stride!

Twisty!
Revisado: 01-18-22
Another good mystery that came together beautifully! I was not expecting the solution. As usual the writing is great, the descriptions of the Scottish coast make you feel as if you are there, and the narrator nails it! The only drawback are the female characterizations. I don’t think a professional police detective with a law degree would be so self conscious or as acutely socially isolated. She would have had to develop some skill and social tolerance to get as far as she has. Also, a professional and modern law enforcement agency would not have such a hostile work environment and certainly not be as overtly ostracizing to any detective - much less a female. Those things briefly took me out of the book, but the story and other writing was good enough that I came back. I really enjoy this series. But please let the woman be full characters in the next books!

Historia
Cal McGill is an Edinburgh-based oceanographer, environmentalist and one-of-a-kind investigator. Using his knowledge of the waves - ocean currents, prevailing winds, shipping records - McGill can track where objects came from or where they've gone. It's a skill that can help solve mysteries ranging from disappearances to murder. Two severed feet wash up on two different islands off the coast of Scotland. Forensics shows that the feet belong to the same body.

Riveting but flawed
Revisado: 01-06-22
I wasn’t sure I would be able to read the book as child sex trafficking is a major plot point. But the book drew me in. The main characters were interesting, the intersecting plots were unusual, the setting (Scotland) was intriguing and the little known historical info was fascinating. I was disappointed by the female characterizations. Even the experienced and educated ‘professional’ women think and act in a stereotypical juvenile manner focused on looks, weight, cattiness, and men. I have found we women are capable of focusing on career and a well rounded life - rather than simply on men and how we can attract men. So this was a significant flaw for me. However, despite this flaw the unusual plot and good writing kept me engaged. Ironic though to depict a young women valiantly triumphing from abuse while depicting the adult women as shallow. Too bad as it was a good book.
