Historia
In a postapocalyptic Africa, the world has changed in many ways; yet in one region genocide between tribes still bloodies the land. A woman who has survived the annihilation of her village and a terrible rape by an enemy general wanders into the desert, hoping to die. Instead, she gives birth to an angry baby girl with hair and skin the colour of sand. Gripped by the certainty that her daughter is different - special - she names her Onyesonwu, which means 'who fears death?' in an ancient language.

Good but maybe not what I hoped.
Revisado: 09-07-21
This is a book I'd describe as "good" in the academic sense. It's bold, provocative, emotional. It had very powerful themes and actively engages in attacking social issues. There are scenes in this book that are some of the most impactful that I have ever read, and I was brought to tears at least once.
Now, that said. I'm not sure I really enjoyed it. The descriptions are often vivid and poetic but sometimes I just wish it was a bit more clear. If often felt like I didn't really understand what was happening and sure that was probably intentional a lot of the time, but I don't know. The vague magic and soft rules sort of bugged me. It is a fantasy story in that there is magic, but really the purpose it serves is less your typical fantasy story and more a metaphor for empowerment.
If you want something different and interesting that you'll want to talk about and discuss this is a great choice.

Historia
Deep in the woods of Maine, there is a dark state facility where kids, abducted from across the United States, are incarcerated. In the Institute they are subjected to a series of tests and procedures meant to combine their exceptional gifts - telepathy, telekinesis - for concentrated effect. Luke Ellis is the latest recruit. He's just a regular 12-year-old, except he's not just smart, he's super-smart. And he has another gift which the Institute wants to use....

It's good but I feel like I've been here before...
Revisado: 07-17-20
Stephen King may have been the man who popularised and even pioneered the "psychic kid, government conspiracy" genera but ironically this book feels a bit unoriginal. don't get me wrong, the characters are great (the good ones particularly, I felt like the bad ones were not Kings best), the story is good and I wanted to know what happened. The problem was it just felt like it didn't bring much new to a well trodden trope. I wasn't surprised by anything, and despite the content which is frequently horrific I wasn't shocked. It's funny that the likes of stranger things, which owe so much to king feel fresh and original (or at least like an original take), but in this one it's a bit like Kings homage to King. May be a good first time King story, but when you've been reading the guy for a few decades it feel a bit like you've already heard this story.

If her time at court has taught Catherine anything, it's that there is no room for weakness in Imperial Russia. With the empress' health failing and rumors of a change in the line of succession, her place in the royal line is once more in jeopardy. Tormented by her sadistic husband and his venomous mistress, Catherine must once more walk the fine line between pleasure and politics - between scandal and survival.

Poor Audio Good Story
Revisado: 04-14-20
I very much enjoyed this series and loved the voice actor in book 1 and 2. The audio in this book is poor quality the levels change frequently and it's tinny. The audio often has sections where the same phrase is repeated. The narrator is also inconsistent and not as good as the previous one.

A bloody, good time.
Revisado: 09-20-19
This is a fun fantasy book. the narrator is visceral and often darkly funny. the characters are very likeable (or hateable when it comes to the villlains) and the world is imaginative and fun. Kristof goes into many gory details and while it could be excessive in another book, it fits perfectly with the story being told. The performance is also great. it's full of energy and definitely captures the tone of the book well.

fascinating world, disappointing story
Revisado: 08-13-19
I loved the world, the concepts, the ideas. But the story meanders, there is no pace, everything happens all at once after a lot of nothing, then it's all over just as it was getting interesting. So many story threads seem to just fizzle. I can appreciate that the characters motivations are meant to be quite ambiguous, but man, I didn't like any of them. The title character a genetically "hacked" construct (basically a biological robot) is the only relatable person, and I just didn't really care about what happened to everyone by the end. The world building however, is great and you really get a sense for the environment. The reading is also very good.

Thoughtful, odd, intriguing
Revisado: 06-30-19
This is a strange book and the ideas and mythology of the book are simultaneously lofty and pedestrian. The writing is beautiful and mundane. I couldn't tell you exactly what I liked about it, nothing much seems to happen, until everything happens all at once like it's no big deal. Every answer gives you heaps of questions, but I was always interested. the characters are fantastic, you'll constantly be playing the game of "oh I wonder what God this is". I wonder if I got more out of it because I'm familiar with many mythologies and if it wouldn't be as good if you didn't know them. it's an incredibly intelligent book, that at the same time is written in an incredibly accessible way. A real standout and worth trying out. in terms of the audio there is a full cast and they do a great job.

World's beyond Imagination
Revisado: 04-21-19
This is one of the most unique books I've readin a while. The story is fascinating and the way it is told over thousands of years but keeps you invested in characters is really impressive. It's amazing how attached you'll get to spiders and how much you will despise humans. An unflinching commentary on what it is to be human, this is a thought provoking and amazing story.

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

The best things are also the worst things
Revisado: 01-07-19
Without giving too much away, the best thing about this is also the worst. The whole thing is told with no narration, it's all communication between crew members or logs. So any time there is action, there is a lot of sound effects and typically someone explaining to someone on the radio what is happening. It's cool and often it can be very immersive, but other times it's very clunky and I just craved some narration to just tell me what was going on. I felt like a few bits didn't make much sense, but it could be because I didn't have a very clear picture of what was happening exactly. (soft spoilers ahead) Also including Ripley is great because she is an excellent character and very well imitated and performed. But by the same token, the efforts to preserve continuity make the whole adventure seem like it may have benefited from being all original characters. There are good reasons for Ripley being in it, but as a result of her presence, the ending seemed a bit convenient. I'm making it sound bad, but it is actually a really enjoyable story and the full cast give an excellent performance.

slow to start but a great cast of characters.
Revisado: 02-10-16
As is the case with many fantasy books there is a period of confusion and world building at the start but once you get rolling with the main two groups of characters it really picks up and will have you guessing what will happen next.
