LOVE!!!!!
Revisado: 07-10-20
This was an incredible story with interesting and engaging characters. A story of trust, manipulation and sacrifice. Sneha Mathan did an amazing job at delivering Alka Joshi's story of a henna artist that built a life for herself fighting against societal standards of oppression. I loved the descriptions of settings and how the stories all intertwined and played for and against one another. I loved everything about this story and the lessons that were learned throughout. The culture is fascinating and interesting while also devastating. Definitely recommend!

Historia
Maire is a baker with an extraordinary gift: she can infuse her treats with emotions and abilities, which are then passed on to those who eat them. She doesn't know why she can do this and remembers nothing of who she is or where she came from. When marauders raid her town, Maire is captured and sold to the eccentric Allemas, who enslaves her and demands that she produce sinister confections, including a witch's gingerbread cottage, a living cookie boy, and size-altering cakes.

Interesting Concept
Revisado: 07-10-20
This was a very strange listen for me. I thought that Kate Rudd narrated it the best that she could, but the nature of this and the references to retellings for old fairy tales just seemed so odd to me. I stuck with the story and, as odd as it seemed to me, I refused to DNF. I think the fairy tale references sort of kept me engaged to see what happens next. The ending was very strange how everything came together. I am not sure that I was adequately prepared for what this book offered, or even what it was about. I very much believe that it was the nature of how unprepared I was for this story which contributed to my lack of enjoyment. At one point I believed it was a strange retelling that incorporated many tales, but without offering spoilers, it was not that at all. It was very sci-fi fiction ish.

Historia
Every day is the same for Rhiannon. She has accepted her life, convinced herself that she deserves her distant, temperamental boyfriend, and even established guidelines by which to live: Don't be too needy. Avoid upsetting him. Never get your hopes up. Then comes the morning when everything changes.

This rating does not reflect my misunderstanding
Revisado: 07-10-20
I thought this book was okay. I went into it thinking that it was a continuation of Every Day, but it was actually Rhiannon's story which was disappointing. However, I did find it interesting to know her reactions to meeting a new person and some of the things that were going on in her head, but realistically I felt like the author just added some additional content in Rhiannon's POV and left the rest of the information the same as the original story. There was nothing really original about it and while I understand that things cannot be entirely different due to the nature of this story, it still seemed to fall short with content specifically related to Rhiannon. Given the change in POV I expected a little more from Rhiannon unfortunately.

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Interesting Enough
Revisado: 07-10-20
I felt that Yareli did a great job performing this audiobook. Jeanine Cummins also did well to build her characters but I found that Lydia fell a bit flat for me, Javier was okay, but Luka appealed to me the most. The view from a child's eyes of how they moved from their home and traveled to cross the U.S./Mexican border. The opening scene was horrifying and devastating, but I did feel as though the story lacked something, I cannot place my finger on it though. This book did open my eyes to POC authors and #ownvoices authors. I would love to listen to first person experiences as opposed to fiction to get a grasp on what really happens.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

A roller coaster ride for sure!
Revisado: 09-14-17
This was an amazing story, Jeanette provided a fantastic performance of her own story. I was unsure what to think of this at first, and I found myself upset at how the children were being treated. Once j started focusing solely on Jeanette and her story I was able to feel what she felt and move along and prevail much as she did!
