Historia
Artemio Volpe has been crowned king of Espher, restoring his ancient line to power—and inheriting the worst crisis the kingdom has ever faced. The Arazi Dragon Lords descend from the north. With flame and blade, they will purge all in their path to see the shadebound witch Orsina destroyed and their prophecies fulfilled. From the south march all the armies of the God-Emperor of Agrant, legions of soldiers backed by the unfathomable power of the living god himself.

The ending, I just... I don't know how to feel about it.

The entire series has felt like a character REGRESSION, as opposed to progression. Throughout, we begin to see as all their flaws compound and build to a point where by the end, I understand why it happened, but... damn, I feel just kind of hollow.

Historia
Two decades ago, Jedi clans clashed in service to feuding lords. Sickened by this endless cycle, a sect of Jedi rebelled, seeking to control their own destiny and claim power in service of no master. They called themselves Sith. The Sith rebellion failed, succumbing to infighting and betrayal, and the once rival lords unified to create an Empire...but even an Empire at peace is not free from violence.

Refreshing and different.

I did not know what I was expecting when I started this book, but It wasn't what I got, in a good way. A lot of peoples reviews are complaining that the story was bad, that it isn't Star Wars, but I quite enjoy the fact that certain parts of this caused me to need to pause, think and wonder. So many books spoon feed the reader meaning, and this one doesn't, it lets you try to figure things out for yourself, and give what happens your own meaning, personally. This was never billed as a classically Star Wars tale, it's a reimagining, an alternate universe. It introduces flavor of yin and yang type philosophy to the Force, and the juxtaposition of Sith and Jedi is refreshing, to me.
I love the characters, so few novels feature older characters, weighed down and burdened by loss and regret, and it's something I love. The dynamic between him and the other characters is complex and interesting, none of them felt purely like a trope.
I find myself very much hoping for a sequel, but if there isn't one, I couldn't be upset. Everything tied up nicely, with the promise of the possibility of more, but to a point where there isn't so much left unsaid that a sequel is needed.
The narration is good, his voice is pleasant and fits the main character, the only downside being a bit of a lack in variety between characters voices. He differentiates the cadence and tone between characters very well, but the actual voice can sound similar at points, where at one or two spots I couldn't tell which character was speaking.
Overall, it's a very enjoyable book, I will definitely listen to it more than once. The only thing to beware of is that this story isn't cut and dry, it's got twists and turns, and a great deal of esoteric threads. I find myself looking forward to this writer's literary offerings.
